WNOX dropping "W" from logo? Shocking development

Checked out edandbob.com, as suggested by the bigbopper. Saw the same confusion indentified by the BB. Saw pictures of the studio and van, both with the dual logos. I'd guess someone, somewhere is getting a chuckle from this discussion thread.

I heard an interesting theory from a broadcast engineer today. He thinks they are preparing to put an HD channel on the air, called "NOX-2." The theory is that the digital channel would be a music format, with a hipper 3-letter "nickname," but still obviously affiliated with the Talker, "WNOX-1." I suppose the HD's full ID, including the "W" would be heard only on the legal ID every hour.

He thinks the van would be shared, hence 2 logos. The engineer told me there are THREE transmitters on the floor in various stages of installation, including a matchedf pair of 100,000 watt Continentals and another one of a different brand, perhaps some offshore (foreign) manufacturer.

Anyone else heard this?[color]

They're going to lease the extra 100k transmitter to Citadel for 98.7. Keep holding your breath for the big announcement. And look for the announcement. It will happen right after you see the flying pigs.

Interesting theory on the HD channel, with all those transmitters in waiting, there's no telling what the Pirkle's are getting ready to unleash on the southeast.

Handle change, huh? Wanna pretend I'm Bobby Denton this time? I'd like to be young Bobby if that's ok. Back when my liver was good and the girls I chased would let me catch 'em.

And I thought your purple suit was silly.

Most FM stations get a “power gain” by stacking bays on the antenna. You take the RF energy that would go into space and redirect it towards the ground where the listeners are. Circular polarization can limit the gain achievable verses horizontal or dual polarization. I know electric is cheap (TVA), but I have never heard of a 100 KW station that got no gain out of their antenna. I have heard of a couple of class A’s (3 or 6 KW) that uses one bay and a 5 or 10 KW transmitter. So I am not too sure about the 100KW transmitters. Power is not as important and antenna height on FM. WOOD Grand Rapids MI with 265 KW covers almost the same area as WBCT @320KW and WLAV with 50KW even on a shorter tower covers almost the same area. The real key the FM is tower height and location. Neither WOOD or WBCT cover half of the area of WOKI with “only” 100KW. In my opinion WOKI has the best of height and location combination of any station east of the Mississippi.

Apparently the new WNOX has a Department of Redundancy Department.

So I am not too sure about the 100KW

Allow me to clarify. Since this is a radio discussion board, I assumed everyone here would recognize that my reference to "100,000 watt transmitters" was an abbreviation, as such a transmitter would actually develop 34,000 watts of floor power before passing through the antenna, with a gain of 3. 34,000 X 3=102,000 watts. Line loss would account for approximately 2,000 watts, leaving an effective radiated power of 100,000 watts. I apologize for my attempt at brevity, and I hope it is now clear to everyone.

The references to WOKI are apparently errors, as the station is now called WNOX. Easy mistake to make, obviously. I agree that it has the market's best coverage, regardless of the call letters.
