WNOX??

Seconded, a trainwreck. Terry Fair is often annoying. And on 100KW and the best FM signal in Eastern Tennessee. A waste of fine RF. Music, please, Johnny. You'd make more money trying to sell a music format.

You must have won the lottery, living off a large trust fund, made it big in business or entertainment, or have a six or seven figure job. Us common folks have to do math just to pay the bills!

Naah. Just never learned to back-time. Instrumental right up to news time bay-bee!

You guys talking about Terry Fair are crazy! I listened to The Drive during the week and enjoyed the heck out of it. Better than the rest of the shows in Knox and it was hilarious. And for his Sunday show, enjoyed it as well. Rather listen to someone who knows what he's talking about than someone who wished they knew. Know a lot of people who feel the same way!

How could anyone think The Drive's air staff is not superior in every way?

I listen every day, and love the fact that WNOX has 2 former Vol and pro football stars, Terry Fair and Dewey Warren, plus the uber-intelligent Russell Smith, and the hilarious Spanky Brown and scads of real authorities on the game. The competing sports show has 2 or 3 ex-disc jockeys and a former newspaper writer, none of whom ever played a down of UT or pro football. Unless the lady did, of course.

How about Kylie Niles, the sing-songy, newscaster on WNOX? I am sure she is a nice person, but her on-air delivery is atrocious.

The tragic part is that this young lady has a pleasant voice, but obviously, no direction whatsoever from her superiors. Seriously, do you morons even bother to COACH your staff? Obviously not. It is simply amazing to me what is "acceptable" in radio these days, in a large city like Knoxville. ???

Wow, that's fairly extreme, calling people "morons" while hiding behind a pseudonym. If they hire someone you don't like, does that make them a moron? If so, I suppose hiring someone you DO like would make them a genius. It is hard to follow that logic, even in a small radio town like Knoxville. But, to take it a step farther, do you like anyone on that station? Or other stations, for that matter? I am just trying to learn who the morons and geniuses are.
And, into which category YOU fit, stereolane.

What Big Bopper said. Perhaps stereolane will purchase her own Knoxville radio station group and school us all.

A cursory Google search on Kiley Niles turned up the following: College educated, extensive media experience, business owner, and exceptionally attractive. If her employers are morons, they lucked up on this hire. Maybe this will help Kiley console herself over stereolane's critique of her radio copy delivery.

Then you must be as happy as I was when I heard Tonya Stout Brown delivering the news this morning. I can only hope that the Pirkle/Brantlee team is planning on having an actual news department, and Tonya is going to head it up!

Next up, finding a suitable replacement for the dry as toast and haughty Kim Simms, Thomas.

Gee, that's wonderful...do any of those things make her qualified to be a news anchor on the radio?

Please, I hardly need to "school" anyone. We know how to COACH our on-air talent. As an OM/PD, I would never allow a news anchor to read a newscast in that manner, let alone on a big signal like WNOX.

It's too late. Damage is done. Those in charge should have made these investments of hiring news people in August of 2010 when the station was put on the air. Instead they settled with not having a news presence and not having someone to guide them in programming.

In response to stereolane:
Amen.

realize they never had anyone at new 100.3 to coach the on air people to begin with. With all due respect to those at 100.3 WNOX, just because you are an on-air legend and a successful sales manager doesn't mean you can program a station.

I can understand the temptation to concentrate on the "talk" part of News Talk due to the fact that good local news gathering can be expensive. There are "small" market stations that have quality news casts with a 2 or 3 person department. A good news department in a 100+ rated market would need news director and 3 or 4 good copy readers to cover 5am till midnight seven day a week, at least two field reports who would do the daily calls to the police / fire and or emergency management information officers.

If you can work a deal to "share" one of the local TV station's local news info this would save a lot. You could just have a newsreader with a desk in the TV station's news room do his or her report from the TV station's newsroom, crediting the TV station's News Department. This would be a good deal for the TV station getting a plug every newscast, and the radio station gets "good" local news.

Problem is WNOX is competing with a station that has a news department (yes on a weaker signal). TV would help but if WNOX wants to be a serious news/talker, that's what's necessarily.

If I were Johnny Pirkle, I would have parked a satellite format on 100.3 while getting my airstaff together. Sensible and would have bought them time to get their format together. Execution on your format is Key!
