WNRQ-HD3

WNRQ has lit up a HD3 subchannel in the last couple of days. It's simulcasting WLAC 1510.

I can't get WNRQ's HD to stay locked in long enough to pass judgement on the audio quality. The fact that I can get it at all on an indoor antenna is a big improvement over HD reception on 1510 itself.

It's been on for about a week. We are just playing with it to see how tough it would be to set up with the new version of the importer. it was pretty picky as far as the sound card used. It's only 16kb right now, but IMHO it doesn't sound any worse than a stream, and on a Sangean HDT-1 tuner into a Sony amp and JBL speakers sounds pretty decent. Once the HD rules go into effect, I'd like to bump it to 24KB, which in mono should sound pretty good. A listener commented on it in Clarksville and you can get it in Murfreesboro, so it must not be doing too bad. I loaned a Sangean to Chris and he could pick up 1510 in HD at home with the indoor antenna. It's a pretty good tuner.

I thought they pretty much have gone into effect, allowing HD/IBOC operation on AM at Night.

Nashsound: Actually, I'm in Pleasant View.

The quality is decent, really it sounds a lot like the direct AM HD signal. (but a lot easier to pick up.) Did have a bit of trouble evaluating it: it won't stay in more than 10 seconds at a time & you've got a callin show on - Murphy's Law seems to require that every time it fades in, the caller (phone line quality) is on the air :)...

I have heard good things about the Sangean, am rather tempted to pick one up. I do hear they're rather overload-prone, but up here 20 miles from the nearest station that's not a big deal.

Scott: No, the Federal Register hasn't gotten around to publishing them yet.

For point of reference, DA 07-3073 (the 3rd digital TV Periodic Review) was adopted on April 25th, and published in the Register this past Tuesday, July 10th.

The IBOC proceeding was adopted on the last day of May. Assuming the same delay holds (**this is probably NOT a valid assumption**) the IBOC proceeding will be published on August 15, and will go into effect 30 days later on September 15th.

Sounds good in Clarksville. I have not had too many problems with it staying locked in the Truck. Just got a JVC KD-HDR1 HD and love it. WLAC is very hard to keep locked in HD, but WNRQ is not bad at all in most parts of Clarksville and Ft. Campbell. I like the HD2 myself. It is the only thing that will make me turn off the XM.

This is a good time for Clear Channel to do this, being UT Football Season is just around the corner. It might help HD sales? Consumers are all different so, it's hard to tell, we'll see.

I revived this topic to let anyone who cares know, we put the WLAC audio back on the WNRQ HD3 channel, this time with the blessings of the hire-ups. The last time we weren't really supposed to do it, but we wanted to see if it would work. Sometimes we still have some fun :)
