WNSC Jazz format flush

I'm trying to figure out where WUNC has tried to establish stations outside of the Triangle and NE NC. Yes, they have a studio in Greensboro, but WUNC-FM has always had a strong signal there, and WFDD never showed much inclination to have a local presence in Greensboro. UNC has transmitters in Rocky Mount and Nags Head/Elizabeth City/etc., but did any other group ever try to establish a full service NPR station in those areas? Has UNC ever applied for or tried to acquire stations elsewhere in NC? Didn't UNC-Asheville formerly own and operate the NPR station there? It seems like WUNC could have picked up that station if they had wanted it. And, isn't the powerful Isothermal Community College NPR station ripe for the picking? Seems like WUNC would snap that station up if they planned to expand statewide. One nice thing about the SCETV radio network--their dominance on the lower (public) end of the dial, with so many high powered stations, has discouraged the development of so many "religious" non-commercial stations in SC, at least outside the upstate.

That does not surprise me at all. You have to remember that to most people in the Raleigh - Durham - Chapel Hill area that the State of NC stops at the Triad and Charlotte. Anything further west just does not exist in their minds. They have little to no interest in this part of the state.

That is the way it has always been and I see little chance of it ever changing.

They also think it ends at the Wake County line to the east. We don't exist either.

As for fortmill's last post... I don't have any hard proof that I can tell you means WUNC wants to expand. It's a overall feeling you get by listening to the station and is what you hear from the rest of the NPR affiliates if you mention WUNC in their presence. They don't call it "North Carolina Public Radio" for nothing.

WFDD DID have a studio with a reporter in Greensboro long before WUNC started moving in there. WUNC's agression is partially responsible for WFDD's format change from Classical to News/Talk. It was either change or risk anhialation. I've heard rumors that WUNC has bought a station, or tower, or something in Davidson county. That means they could easily broadcast into Winston-Salem. 5 years from now, I wouldn't be surprised to see them with a strong presence throughout the state. Yup...."North Carolina's Public Radio Station". They're using that for a reason.
