WNSH off air for now, completing upgrade

A mighty 30kW signal (with a...quirky...pattern) is about to come to WNSH. Owner Keating Willcox
just announced that they're off air this week while the upgrade is completed and that even
though Greenstone Media went kaput, they are still "radio for women" _days_ ("Women's Talk Radio, By Women, For Women")

Hey Keating is it OK for men to listen to Laura Ingraham, at least? :)

>>WNSH is off the air from Monday until our upgrade is complete. Our new
line-up replaces the Greenstone Media with shows that have at least one
woman so we are still Women's talk radio during the weekdays

And for this, the Taunton area had to sacrifice its only locally oriented radio service (1570 WPEP).

And they call this "progress"? ???

yes it's a shame that turning off WPEP had to be a part of that. I guess with various signal patterns
there would be no way to make WNSH into a more solid North Shore signal so they're trying this
new signal which might send a bit of it toward Boston (but WPEP had to be sacrificed to make room
for it)...while the fishies might get most of the signal. (The signal map below does suggest it would
do better on the North Shore, though, but...)

"Take with a PECK of salt", as Dan S. said, but...:
http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WNSH&service=AM&status=C&hours=D

once it goes through we'll have to see just how well it could be received in places like Lowell, Framingham,
Cape Cod, or Woonsocket. I would think the area they have in the "local" red region might get it,
but otherwise...? Too far to the right of the dial.

I've told you before; it's NOT a quirky pattern it's NON-DIRECTIONAL!!! What looks like a pattern in the Radio-Locator.com "coverage map" is the result of the near-zero conductivity of the solid rock on which the tower stands and to the immediate north of that point and the outstanding conductivity of the salt water a very short distance to the south of the tower. Keating gave up on the DA because ND will be much cheaper to build and maintain, because the FCC, rather surprisingly, didn't give him a hard time about it (several stations will receive new interference), and, no doubt, because it will provide some coverage of Boston. Depending on how good the signal is in Boston, the value of the station could increase dramatically.

Oh OK--I didn't even notice the "non-directional--2 patterns" entry on that radio-locator page, I just clicked
onto the day pattern page without checking! got it

The off the air period is now till Thu, I think. Am in Beverly a mile from their xmtr and all I can pick up on
1570 is some distant talk station ("Daybreak USA", USA Network news on half hour)-- not sure who.
Radio-locator.com listed (freq search) some stations in upstate NY; could be one of them but from
looking at websites, I'm not so sure.
It can't be WPEP, doing one last gasp? Surely not...or WNSH putting out micropower (if so, why isn't
Dr Joy Browne on right now; and we were told they'd be off!). It's a mystery--will have to see if I can get an ID from listening (was
in my car; not sure if my home stereo can pick it up)

I suspected that the "mystery station" might be WPEP...it probably is. Guess it isn't dark yet after all;
at 1 pm, there was NO ID just some various bleep noises. Went into USA Network news and then
a talk host started--couldn't quite hear his name. At the end of a political monolgue, it said "this
is nationwide broadcast of the Jim Sumpter show". Looked up online; he has 37 stations and one is:

Taunton WPEP-AM 1570 Mon-Fri 1p-3p

Well, if WPEP is to go dark in order for WNSH to go forward with 30kW, it looks like 'PEP is doing a
last few days before the switch is pulled.
Assuming that it was WPEP I was picking up...good chance it was
