WNSI call letter change

I just noticed in the FCC database that both WNSI AM and FM licensed to Robertsdale and Atmore, respectively, have changed their calls to WBZR AM and FM, as of 5/4. Anybody on the coast who can shed some light on what, if anything, happened to the stations, as far as format goes?

If I understand the info off the Alabama Media Page correctly, the slogan has changed to "The Buzz" but still is sporting a sports format.

As far as I know they're both simulcast during the day with Fox Sports Radio programming. The morning shows appear to be different, however. Wikipedia is showing "The Morning Buzz" as the morning show on the AM, with "The L.A. Morning Show" on the FM.

I'll be down there in a month or two and will try to snag the stations if I can, to see what's going on.

Heard a local morning show this AM, followed by Glen Beck at 9 (no way I will stay around and listen to that). Heard promos for Dave Ramsey and Dennis Miller syndicated shows. Apparently it's still much the same as it was when WNSI calls prevailed, news/talk/sports. CBS News on the hour. The previous morning show had several participants, primarily one who was in ownership and/or management, but he was recently arrested as a sex offender (won't use his name; may have been acquitted).

I heard mention of Gulf Coast Broadcasting with the legal ID, which suggests the owner of 105.7 Orange Beach and 1220 Fairhope has taken over. Legal ID and promos mentioned both AM and FM. I seriously doubt that either station has sufficient audience to warrant separate programming, even in one daypart.

I'm the Ops Manager for WBZR. You are correct, it is now owned by Gulf Coast Broadcasting (owner of WCSN in Orange Beach and WABF in Fairhope)

We've shifted the format to more News/Talk and less sports, so Fox is gone. You can see the full program schedule and listen to us at http://BuzzRadioOnline.com

I have just discovered that WBZR-AM and WBZR-FM carries "Leo Laporte the Tech Guy", which I had suggested for WAVH-FM, WNTM-AM, and WABB-AM previously. I wish I could hear the program from my radio in midtown Mobile instead of an online stream, since I have a dial-up Internet connection.

I once watched him on the former Call for Help TV program. This show was awesome and I learned so much from it, during the time I was learning how to use a Computer. I'm really showing my age here, aren't I?

P.S. What wonderful memories I have of that show. Glad you can still hear him though. Hope you'll learn something from him, like I did.

Leo is on from 1 to 4 both Saturday and Sunday. Both programs are live.

^Thank you and pardon the unintended use of the word "carries" instead of "carry" in my previous post. A limit of 24 hours to edit posts would be enough time for many busy users.

I was able to hear WBZR-AM today and I got to hear "Leo Laporte the Tech Guy" on my radio for the first time. In spite of the static, I understood every word and enjoyed the program.

The sports section of the Mobile Press-Register still lists WBZR-AM and WBZR-FM's call letters as WNSI and the local morning program as "The L. A. Morning Show" instead of "The Morning Buzz".

They had some of the cable listings for 'TV Preview' way wrong too. Shoot 'em a polite email or two, and they'll fix it eventually.

Flomaton and Atmore both had AM's that have disappeared.

Atmore's lost two AM stations to [bigger] profit chasing: WPHG 1620 (the expanded band sucessor to the 'late' WGYJ 1590) is now P-cola's WNRP. The once-Creek Indian owned WASG 550 still exists even though it's been largely silent for years, but will likely see a 'revival' (with a religious format, perhaps?) as a Daphne-licensed station paired Mobile's 95.7 translator.

What station did Flomaton have?

I'll tackle this one since I am originally from Atmore (and Flomaton is 14 miles away). WTCB 990 came on in the late 50s with 500 watts. Calls stood for Tri City (or County) Broadcasting (Flomaton, Century FL, and South Flomaton - or Escambia Co AL, Escambia Co FL, and Santa Rosa County FL). Because of 980 AM in Pensacola, 500 watts was all they could get. Later the station moved to 1090, and relocated to Cantonment. It had the calls WPIK and WRBK over time. Flomaton-Century simply does not have the size to support a station. The only redeeming thing about the station was its call letters ... a decade after it came on, TCB became a hip street-slang expression (for "Takin' Care of Business") , and I often thought someone would pay WTCB to surrender the calls.

Atmore started with WATM in the 50s. It was on 1580, 1590, then 1620. Other call letters have been WSKR WGYJ and WPHG. It was a daytimer, then a 3 tower DA fulltimer on 1590. Then it was moved to the Pensacola area as WNRP.

Its other AM, WASG, was on 1140, then 550, the moved to Cantonment, then silent.

I checked a source as I couldn't remember exactly when, but WTCB 990 Flomaton commenced operations in 1955. WATM's beginning was 1949.

The original question was whether Robertsdale AM 1000 has ever been profitable. I frankly doubt it. WHEP 1310 in nearby Foley has been very successful for a small town daytimer for many years. It even shows up in the Arbitron, albeit with a 0.7 or so. I don't remember ever seeing Robertsdale 1000 show up. It certainly didn't show in Arbitron or Birch ratings between 1986 and 1992, the years when I owned a station in that metro survey area (WDLT). Believe it started around 1985 as WXWY.
