WNTK Nantucket Applying For Power Increase

While the WGBH Educational Foundation is still able to count on Federal largess, they've applied to the FCC to boost the ERP of classical-formatted (and WCRB rebroadcaster) WNTK-FM 89.5 on Nantucket. Right now, they have what amounts to flea power that according to the FCC file on WNTK barely covers the island itself. Their request to go to 6KW NDA H&V at about 100 feet HAAT will solve that problem and perhaps reach portions of the Cape of Cod. The FCC seems to be sitting on applications to build a new FM on WNTK's frequency in Harwich (probably "religious" like so many LPFMs and translators on the sandbar). WNTK's application may be a step to forestall that from happening. NECRAT has a photo of WNTK's current antenna; Mike may have the hard duty of travelling to Nantucket to take a photo of its new antenna if they get what they want.

Are you sure those call letters are right? WNTK-FM is licensed to New London NH and serves the Upper Valley of NH/VT.

It's WNCK

Correctimundo...and I even know that the talk station in NH is WNTK; they recently dropped Glenn Beck and I posted that fact to Media Matters. Ooopsie.

Well, I think there's more to this upgrade than trying to cover the Island. WNCK covers the entire Island end to end without any issues. I can hear it on a clock radio on the east end of the Island which is about as far as one can be from their transmitter on the northwestern part of the Island. It also booms in to all of the inn's and B&Bs in the center of town. Since their transmitter is located on the northern part of the Island, 6KW will certainly scoot across the water and be very listenable on the Cape. After all, the Island is only 12 miles by 4 miles.

It’s a 3db increase, not a big deal.

Big boo-boo here, somehow I read the original post as saying 1 KW, when it really said 6 KW. From 500 watts that’s over 10 db. So please disregard my original post.
