WNTN Newton now on air at night with low power

I noticed last year that AM 1550 WNTN Newton had been granted authorization to broadcast at night with only three watts (down from 10kW in the daytime). The station had been a daytimer since its original sign on in 1968.

This week, I noticed that they are now using this authorization. It covers more ground than I would expect for three watts. I heard it in the car at night, though weakly, in Cambridge, Somerville, and Kenmore Square, Boston. During different hours, I've heard Greek music and Irish music with no hosts, and automated TOH ID's.

I love Greek music. they should play new Greek music at night every night, and new soft Asian music during the overnight

WNTN Newtomn

The weird thing about this is the fact that for years, WNTN had been signing-off at 5:00 pm in the summer when they could have continued broadcasting until 8:15 or 8:30 pm EDT.

WNTN Signal

Picked up a faint NTN signal on Rt 20 this morning near the Sudbury/Marbloro line at around 5:45 am. Signal got much stronger by the time I reached Wayland Center. Pretty Impressive for 3 wts!
