WNVY & WASG Pensacola

Prepare for one of the least interesting post in recent history on this board... it doesn't involve Ron Hale or WPFM. ;D

I scanned the dial today and noticed that WNVY Cantonment (Pensacola) has changed frequencies from 1090 to 1070. I don't listen to this station so I couldn't tell you if they sound any better or gained a better signal with this move.

I also noticed that WASG 550 Atmore (Pensacola) is off the air. A quick check on fcc.gov shows that WASG is expected to be silent for an extended period of time because they have "lost their transmitter site". They don't plan on building a new facility because they are waiting for the FCC to approve a city of license change to Daphne. (Haven't they been trying to do that for 10 years?) When (or If) that change is approved they plan on resurrecting 550 as a Mobile station at the WIJD site in Prichard, AL. If the FCC doesn't approve the move to Mobile, those folks are going be in a mess.

Yet Alex Jones still has 550 Pensacola listed as an affilate.. *SIGH*

That station's signal went far, too :(

Now, the only thing on 550 would be mexican/cuban crap.

Though there's a station that comes in that ID's in English with translators in NYC and the British Antilles but it's a Spanish Christian station (i think that's 540, though)

Are there any other players that we could hear that has a chance to come in on 550?

-Rob

I don't know who Alex Jones is, but he's probably still on. 550 was usually just a simulcast of WVTJ 610, so I assume all the same shows are still on 610...
Also, the owner(s) of WASG and WVTJ have an application (or maybe even a construction permit) for a new station in Pensacola on 1140. They may also be building some other new AMs in the area, I can't remember.

Last I checked, paid religion programmes.
*sigh*

I would like to see 550 become a 10KW flamethrower (non directional) 24/7 but THAT won't happen.

This area needs either that or an FM talk station.

That'd be interesting if they moved WASG to that 1140 frequency. WASG was originally on 1140 before moving to 550 several years ago. Can't remember how long it's been since they moved to 550, but I do remember hearing WASG on 1140 back in the mid 80's.

That was a long time ago. AM wasn't important and stations were changing formats and going dark left and right. Wasn't the old 1140 a 50KW station covering Mobile to Destin? I wonder if they can get that much power for the new 1140...

It's hard to remember, but seems like they were using less than that, maybe 10, 15, or 25 KW.

Is Escambia County the World Capital of people who sit at home listening to AM Christian stations who stuff money into envelopes and keep these guys on the air? 610, 1230, 1090 and (sometimes) 550? Wow!

Or are these stations just toys for rich preachers? Somebody 'splain this to me.

In the oddball case of 1090/1070, who in their right mind would spend the considerable time, effort & money to move a worthless AM station 20 kHz down the dial in order to go from 10kw to 15kw daytime (more watts spilling into the Gulf) and get a whopping 28 watts (!!!!!!!) of nighttime power?

There is the outside chance, I suppose, that this is the first move in an upgrade drama that could see multiple towers rise from the Gonzales/Cantonment swamp and shoot 10KW (or more) of night-time Christianity into the Gulf. 1070 is one of those broken-down Clears with no eastern Class A AM to protect. WIBC in Indy uses 6 towers for their 10KW night array. It's not impossible.

But, again. Why?

Geez...poledo...then you should have just asked Charlie to sign this post off than waste everybodys time. :)
Now, I'll actually go and read what's going on. lol

So, maybe I forgot to take my Thorazine and Quaaludes when I started this post.

Talking about a cluster of low rated AMs in market #123 would bore most people who read here. But the situation seems very curious to me.

Over the past year or so Pensacola Christian Radio (Glinter) has done some very strange things.
First, they have purchased an LPTV, Channel 39. Why?
Second, he sold 1230 to the Catholics. Evil?
Third, he moved 1090 to 1070 with no significant increase in facilities. Crazy?
Fourth, he took down 550 before he got FCC clearance to move it to Mobile. Risky?
Lastly, he's waiting on FCC approval for one or more new AMs to help him spread the word. Gambling addiction?

With all these moves, he hasn't made a move into the non-com FM band, which is also controlled by preachers.
I just can't figure this Preacher out.

We lost our Classic Country this week. Glinter needs to turn loose one of his stations so Larry Butler can start spinning records again.
