WNYG Drops Christian Contemporary, close to the end

WNYG has dropped the Christian Contemporary format and is simulcasting WNSW. The switch happened at 5pm Monday afternoon.

It seems the license only has another 3-5 months before it will be silenced so that upgrades can be made to WNSW's signal.

The way I heard it this morning was at 10 pm the station went to dead air. At 1pm I was receiving Spanish Talk Radio for thr rest of the day. What do you mean by close to the end? Is NYG finally done?

How sad, but we all knew it was inevitable. I have many fond memories of my time at the house on 109 from March, 1988 thru April, 1994. From starting off as an intern filing copy in the basement, to working my way upstairs to be with the DJ's in the studio, to becoming a board op on Sundays, to doing fill in DJ shifts, to eventually producing and running a weekly countown show on Friday nights. I also met some really nice people who became a part of my extended family during my time there as well. WNYG was a home away from home for us. Where else could you go at almost anytime of the day or night and be welcomed. They don't make them like WNYG anymore and I doubt they ever will again :'(

From what I'm told the deal to move it to Medford is dead.

I did not hear the switchover but was told it was 5pm. Same source said the station only has a few months left before the license is surrendered.

First-adjacent WNSW lost its Tx site a couple of years ago. From what I've heard, WNSW is operating at low power from temporary facilities at what is supposed to become its new permanent site--a diplex with WPAT from WPAT's four towers near the Garden State Parkway in Clifton. If WNYG does not move to Medford (it has a CP for that move), it has to go dark. If WNYG does not move or go dark, WNSW will eventually lose its license and the license for a New York area AM with 10 kW-D/7-kW-N DA-2 from towers that will have an electrical height of 225 degrees at 1430, making them super efficient, would be too valuable for MRBI to lose without getting something of considerable value in return.

It's a royal shame. I spent the first 11 years of my life in Babylon. I always thought it was cool that we had three radio stations. I remember the WBAB 1440 jingles, the constant move of personnel between WBAB and WBIC and the WGLI towers in the swamp.

The idea that both WNYG & WGLI would be lost for upgrades to other stations is painful.
