WNYZ FM 87.7

It's the aural signal of a TV station.

In a nutshell:

87.7 FM is the same audio channel as the Channel 6 on your TV. So if you have a TV station broadcasting on Channel 6, you will hear the audio at 87.7 on the FM dial. In New Orleans, we hear the NBC affiliate.

But in New York, the folks there have decided to lease the audio portion of that signal out to Russian broadcasters. So right now, they're airing anything and everything on the TV side, but you won't hear the audio from the video. Instead, you'll hear the Russian programming. Crazy, huh?

Crazy like a fox.

Apparently, the whole idea of getting this LPTV license on Channel 6 was to secure the audio service on 87.7, a frequency that most FM tuners receive.
Like with most LPTV signals, the coverage area of the video service is pretty
small...sometimes only a couple of miles. But the audio tends to get out better. This seems to have been their plan....to squeeze another "FM radio station" into a portion of the crowded and valuable New York City metro.

Are you sure that they are splitting the audio and video? I didn't think that it was technically possible to do that. I thought that they were programming it for "radio" (87.7) and that the TV picture didn't matter.

Anyone know more about this? I can't see the Channel 6 part where I live.
Where do they transmit from?

It indeed is true. They're broadcasting off the Citicorp Tower in Long Island City. I live a few miles away, and while the video signal is weak, I am able to receive it with rabbit ears. The audio signal is indeed different from the video signal....quite weird to watch.

A search of the FCC database shows this station as WNYZ-LP, an LPTV station on channel 6. The aural carrier, which you are hearing on your FM radio, is actually 87.76 MHz. The nominal frequency would be 87.75, but WNYZ operates at a positive offset to minimize interference to other channel 6 stations in the region, such as WPVI-TV in Philadelphia and WRGB in Schenectady.

So if you put on Channel 6, you get a picture with unrelated sound? What is on the video feed? Again, it seems like they established this facility for 87.7 audio (a "new FM station"), and that the picture is a throwaway. Do you get this impression, too?

That is exactly what they're doing. They've squeezed another fm station into the market. It could be a great ploy for a video/radio station.

Wasn't it running reggaeton at one point before WCAA/WZAA picked the format up?

How long has it been Russian brokered?

It was never Reggaeton. They've been brokered Russian since they signed on about a year ago.

when I was on canal street a few weeks back before I came back to vt for school I saw people wearing a shirt with 87.7 on it. unfortunately, the people wearing it didn't speak english oh well...

I think at the very very beginning, for a few days, they did have Reggaeton-type programming, before switching over to full Russian ever since. I know they are supposed to be broadcastong on 87.76 but it seems that the audio is anchored directly on 87.70, and it gets out far, I've even gotten traces of the signal well into Suffolk County.

For the dance fans, I know they sometimes air dance music on weekend overnights.

loud and clear in stamford ct, which as some of you might know is the end of the line for the FCC protected contour for NYC radio stations.

I think those are the video contours. The audio seems to get out much further than that and doesn't seem to be as directional. It covers the five boroughs and most of Nassau County with ease.
