WNYZ-LP Deleted?

Although not quite radio, I think it's history warrants a post here.

I noticed that the FCC sent the following letter to Island Broadcasting on June 29th:

http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getimportletter_exh.cgi?import_letter_id=26580

It says that because the digital CP for WNYZ-LP expired in 2010, and the request for extension was filed after the expiration, that the CP has expired, the permit cancelled, and the call letters deleted.

WNYZ-LP is only showing up as DWNYZ-LP in the database. Does this mean it's truly dead? Is it still on the air right now?

There was a discussion on this board a couple of years ago about WNYZ's application for a digital permit. It was rather complex, but I think the gist of it was that it was apparently a maneuver to keep the analog signal on the air longer. In the next few years, the F.C.C. may require all analog TV signals to shut down, including low power ones.
But for now, analog WNYZ remains on 87.74 FM, with its brokered programming.

WNYZ might as well be dead to me after October 30, 2009. I could care less about Island Broadcasting now. Let them go off the air for good, since any regular format on the 87.7 frequency is doomed to fail.

Wow, someone screwed up big time at Island. How on earth do you let a CP expire and not pay attention to the date to file your extension? It amazes me that things like this slip by and now they're out a license.

Effectively, they are a pirate now.

I doubt that WNYZ 87.7 would stay on the air illegally. It does not make sense to me that the TV/radio station would immediately lose its license to broadcast on analog, due to issues with the construction permit for its digital signal.
I wonder whether the F.C.C. simply made a mistake in totally deleting the listing for the station, rather than just revoking permission for them to broadcast digital signals.
The Wikipedia entry for WNYZ had said that the station can no longer be on the air. This has been removed.

Wouldn't be the first 87.7 pirate. Come up to Boston, 87.7 ran for two years before being shut down. I'll bet they ride the wave until they get shut down. $10,000 fine is the cost of business. Funny that you can run an illegal radio (in this case TV) station for a couple years and get fined $10k but if you say "shit" on the air it could be $325k. Yepp, the priorities in this country are out of whack.

I'm pretty sure you're right, that what expired was the authority to flash-cut to digital, not their authority to continue broadcasting in analog.

I'm assuming that D before WNYZ means deleted. I've seen S before call letters.. what's that stand for?
