WOAI adds Mexicanal to 4.2

San Antonio's NBC outlet has replaced Weather+ with Mexicanal. It's a collection of news and cultural programs from Mexico. Most are produced by public broadcasters in the various states across Mexico. Add that to LATV on 12.2, Enlace TV on 23.4 and Telefutura on 41.2 and the sub channels are building quite a slate targeting SA's Hispanics.

Boy... Whatever happened to weather stations and radars?

The subchannels are finally making progress with some potentially worthwhile programming. Although it would be nice if there is at least one weather subchannel available in a given market. Wonder if Weather Channel's WeatherScan Local service could be made available to NBC affils? The all-graphic format wouldn't require much bandwidth.

English website for Mexicanal is here: http://mexicanal.com/english

Well that would a problem because the station would need to cough up some cash and in today's ecomomy... They would not want to do that. That is why here in DFW KXAS 5.2 is station-made. Hey 3 stations are off the air here thanx to the "brand-new" dtv transmitters.

Yeah but i thought that WOAI would have it covered as well.

In my opinion, a market only needs one weather subchannel. Any more than that and you're just wasting bandwidth duplicating the same information over and over.

True about duplication, but you're forgetting branding. It's the same reason we have to be bombarded with a million "tonight at 10" promos during drive-time. I know in D-FW all four stations are trying to convince us their weather guy person/meteorologist is best. If, for example, WFAA dropped its weather on 8.2, average interested weather viewer probably would always go to KXAS' 5.2. Guess who average interested weather viewer turns to when the sky has that eerie green glow to it on a Spring afternoon?

That said, I agree, Trip, there's better use for at least some of that bandwidth. KDFW's 4.2 and WFAA's 8.3 are an absolute waste to me.
