WOCL changes

1059 Sunny FM is now using the positioner "The Best of the 70s, 80s, and 90s" and have added quite a few 90s tracks. In the last few days I have heard The Cranberries, Alanis, Matchbox 20, Nirvana, and others that were quite recently still Hot AC recurrent/gold.

This seems to put them in line with the two stations that have flipped to "Big" without doing a rebranding.

Meh, so they added a few more songs into the playlist. From what I've seen looking at the last songs played today, they're playing 1 70's and 1-2 90's songs per hour which was about what they were previously playing. Maybe it will be gradual change, but they need to up the 70's & 90's ratio.

I've heard quite a few songs in the last several days that never would have been on Sunny prior to this tweak. None of them are anything out of the ordinary for radio, but they are definitely songs they weren't touching until they essentially tweaked to the "Big" format without calling themselves Big. Looking at today (Sunday 11/6) they have played:

12:35pm: Basket Case - Green Day
11:31am: No Scrubs - TLC
11:07am: Kryptonite - Three Doors Down
2:44am: It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over - Lenny Kravitz
2:24am: Hold My Hand - Hootie & The Blowfish
1:11am: Lovefool - The Cardigans
1:00am: Rapper's Delight - Sugarhill Gang
12:13am: Name - The Goo Goo Dolls

Yesterday (Sat 11/5) not including the speciality show from 7p-12a:

4:34pm: Mambo # 5 - Lou Bega
3:10pm: Dreamlover - Mariah Carey
1:36pm: All That She Wants - Ace of Base
11:10am: Linger - The Cranberries
3:21am: Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Notice that none of these titles are getting play after 4am and before 11am. That must mean something…

Because morning shows generally have both shorter listening spans and more non-music content, they very often are programmed without the lower scoring music category or categories.

This is something I've been doing for about 50 years and the concept was not something that was my own original idea... 😲

I have noticed in the last few weeks that Sunny no longer has Sybil McGuire on middays. She was tracked (although she is local here in FL) and has been with Sunny for 10 years, first as weekends, then nights, then middays.

With the morning show unlistenable these days, Sybil and Domino are the only music personalities on the station. I'm pretty sure Domino hasn't taken a single day off his shift since he started at Sunny. But middays are now jukeboxed. And outside of the syndicated AT40 the 80s and Scott Shannon shows on weekend mornings (and I believe Saturday middays which Domino tracks), weekends are jockless as well.
