WOCL vs. WJRR - a coincidence?

I recently started going to college, and the 60+ min of commuting each day has allowed me to listen more to terrestrial radio... recently (especially over the past few days) I've been noticing particular songs being played simultaneously on both local rock stations, O-Rock WOCL and Real Rock WJRR. At first, I thought it was a coincidence that Saliva's "Always" was being played on O-Rock just 30 secs after it started on Real Rock - I don't really like the song, so when it came on one channel, I flipped the dial only to hear it on the other. However, I noticed it again last night, and at least 2 different times today, with the most recent song being Seether's "Remedy" just a few minutes ago.

I know radio stations like to dig at each other, but doing stuff like that really ticks me off. It's way too obvious, and although it may be fun for Real Rock to poke fun at O-Rock's "We Play What You Want" positioner, it's stupid IMO for one station to intentionally play the other station's song at the same time.

Am I just imagining things, or is this a common tactic in radio? And is it effective? What do the radio junkies and industry members here think?
______________

I would think this is just a coincidence. I mean, why would you listen to one station and play the identical song that it is playing 30 seconds later? If it made the listener flip from one station, will they not flip yours also? If you are in an area with a bunch of Top 40 stations, especially ones from different markets, you will hear the Top 5 songs in the country like that. At least around here...
______________

I've noticed this happening with the two rock stations here in Cleveland....sometimes I also think that it has to be more than coincidence. However there have been times when the station I work at will be playing the same song as the other "alternative" station in town, and I know that we are not copying off them. Just yesterday Coldplay's "Speed Of Sound" was started on both my station and the other one almost simultaneously, it was weird, but purely coincidental.

That's what I am saying. When you are dealing with currents, I'm sure it happens a lot. I'm sure at least one other radio station started Coldplay in a different market at exactly the same time too.

Now, if you are hearing it with older stuff, say STP or Nirvana or something, I might side with you. When two stations are spinning the same track 40 or 50 times in a week and they are both running similar clocks, playing the same song at the same time is inevitable.
______________

I heard it happen again today... Real Rock jock hyped the new Disturbed single to be played in the 4pm hour, and O-Rock plays it just 2-3 songs after the hype. I'd chalk it up to coincidence if stuff like that didn't happen, or if it happened during off-peak dayparts, but it doesn't.
______________

Nah, it was debuted on Wednesday... not sure which station did it first cause they both claim to have "world premiered" it. But it was already debuted before yesterday.
______________
