WJMN does not cater to African American . Britney Spears is not on most African American playlist .

It doesn't make sense to have WJMN in newton people there are high income and spoiled teens with their Iphones and IPods. One time i was downtown Boston at top of a 3 story parking lot with a clear view and could not pick up WJMN well due to PRU stations interference.

I think radios today are much better.

A lot of older radios had much better filtering and head-end protection than today's radios do, so some of them are indeed better receivers than modern radios are. Every time I visit Boston I always make a trip to In Your Ear in Allston and check out the consignment wall, looking for 1970's and early 1980's-era receivers.

The big exception is HD Radio receivers. You can say whatever you want about HD Radio as a transmission medium, but one really positive outcome from HD Radio has been the receivers: generally speaking they are leaps and bounds ahead of anything else out there. Especially for FM, but also for AM on most models. The adjacent-channel interference rejection is insanely good, even on the portable receivers. And generally they are quite sensitive.

iPod qualifies as spoiling, shall we all be sentenced to AM radios?

lets see.. 1600 AM broadcasting from Newton - definitely the most diverse station on the dial in terms of ethnicity and culture representation. . i discoverd another around 1550, also from Newton, WNTN no less

im kind of grateful for Pru interference - recieving HF on a rooftop is a real challenge without advanced Magnetic-loop skills

HD Radio may have been the cause of recent improvements in FM-band RFICs (radio-frequency integrated circuits), but I don't think that is the case with recent improvements in AM-band RFICs. A whole bunch of incredibly good pocket-sized Japanese/Taiwanese analog AM radios have hit the market in the past two years. I have not played with any such receivers but the reviews, by very finicky AM DXers, are unbelievably positive. In fact, there is a Web site (sorry, I don't know the URL, but a little googling--try ultra-light AM DX as your search string--should get you there) dedicated to these receivers, most of which are not very expensive. The AM DX community (or what's left of it) now swears by these little radios, which many afficionados claim are the best thing for AM DX short of communications receivers that are long-since out of production, weigh 30+ lb, and are available only on eBay for $500 apiece and up, if you can find a seller that you trust. Anyhow, I suspect that the designers of AM HD receivers found that it was an absolute no-brainer to latch onto the RFICs from these new analog AM radios because the RFICs are more selective and more sensitive than anything based on older technology. If I'm not mistaken, this new generation of AM-band RFICs make extensive use of DSP (digital signal procressing), which makes it possible to build filters with incredible characteristics.

I thought Jam'n reaches downtown Boston, after looking at the Radio-Locator map, but I guess not...

But anyway, Jam'n 94.5 is such a joke. They're the "Radio Disney of Hip-Hop stations" (as someone said in my Jam'n thread a while ago). And yes, they have played Britney Spears when I checked yes.com in the summer, which doesn't make sense. I never actually heard Britney Spears being played on any hip-hop stations. If you're a rhythmic top 40, I guess its okay to lean to pop-music, but Jam'n says they're "Official #1 for Hip Hop and R&B", but where's the R&B? Most of the hip-hop they play is mainly songs that already play on sister Kiss 108.

Hey moron how do they do in the ratings?

Although R-L's maps are theoretical, and not done by actual field tests, the map ( http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WJMN&service=FM&status=L&hours=U ) clearly shows the signal reaches Boston in their local contour, which means all but the crappiest walkman should be able to pick it up.

But since everyone in Boston is so busy listening to Pirate Radio, why do they need to cater the the hard core inner city gang banging hip hop crowd since they don't listen and don't have the economic resources the spoiled rich kid wanna be from Weston has at their disposal.

You program to keep your P1 listening between breaks. Wouldn't you like to know what the General Sales Manager for CC Boston is telling their potential clients. is it A) we are going to deliver you the inner city youth to are trying to attract to your business, or B) our P1 is comprised of 12 to 24 year olds who live in the suburbs of Boston, with an estimated household income of 150K+?

If there was money to be made by catering to the hip hop inner city crowd, Radio One wouldn't have walked away from Boston with their tail between their legs.

It's all about the Benjamin's!

Last time I heard, they were saying "Number 1 for Hip Hop & Today's Hit Music," which is exactly what they are.

This is absolutely correct. They dropped "R&B" from their slogan in favor of "Today's Hit Music" which directly coincided with the addition of rhythmic pop/dance acts like Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. People should really get their facts straight before they start rants on message boards...

Yeah but those people who live in suburbs of Boston don't listen to radio and they can buy all the music in iTunes because they have the money for it.

But, you can't put AM antennas on top of skyscrapers in the city like you can FM's. AM antennas don't work that way, and I don't think there are any good locations for full-power full-time (24-hour) AM antennas in the City of Boston. Most 24-hour full-power AM stations must be directional (at least at night), requiring at least two towers or more.

The best strategy for AM towers has traditionally been to locate them in an area with the proper type of ground and environment in the suburbs outside of the target city, out in the main direction away from the city that they must null their signal toward, and then beam the directional signal toward and over the city from there.
