WODS new contest number

It was just announced that WODS new contest number is 617-931-1033. I wonder if they did this to be just like all the other Boston stations. I noticed a lot of stations in Boston all have 617-931- and then the last 4 digits will somehow represent the station's frequency. WMJX has 931-1067, the old WMKK used to have 931-1293, and as far back as I can remember, WBMX has had 931-1234. Maybe they should switch to 931-1041. I'm guessing 931 is a special prefix exclusively meant for radio stations.

931 numbers in Boston are part of what's called a "choke" system. It's designed protect regular telephone service (most especially, 911 calls) from being overloaded when lots of calls are bombarding only a few phone numbers. The choke system routes excess calls to dead trunks and returns a busy signal to the caller.

Supposedly the origin of the choke system was the time that WABC/New York attempted to give away two tickets to the Beatles concert at Shea Stadium. The resulting overload melted some cables and cut off 911 service to Brooklyn and Queens. Needless to say the phone company was not any too pleased and told ABC management, in so many words, "don't do it again or else you will find yourselves without any phone service at all" (remember, back then the telephone company owned everything, including all the subscriber equipment). Meanwhile, their engineers came up with the choke system to prevent such occurrences.

Way back in 1972/1973 WRKO was using 931-1668 for their request line and contests....although I have no idea what number they are using these days...

Through the Jerry Williams years and into now I think WRKO has 266-6868, for callers.

WMWM used to have its frequency in the main number, 978-745-9170 (it had a couple
other numbers before that) but when Salem State got its own exchange, 542, we found
they wouldn't offer us the 9170 at the end (only so many numbers) so it's now 978-542-8500.

While WEEI accents the 93.7 freq, their phone # I believe is 742-0850 after the 850 freq,
and texts to 850850

911 didn't exist until 1968, and wasn't implemented in New York City until 1973. Wasn't the Beatles' last tour in 1966?

My bad. 911 should have been in quotes. I think the citywide emergency number at the time was SPring7-1234. In any case, cutting off entire boroughs from emergency service did not sit well with the phone company.

Best phone number ever in Boston radio.
