WOFX-AM 980 DROPS METS FOR RED SOX

It has been released that WOFX-AM clear channels Fox sports station in the Albany DMA has dropped the Mets for Boston Red Sox play by play. I can't imagine someone else not picking up the Mets. Two possibilities come to mind. WROW 590 and WGDJ Talk 1300.

As a Mets fan I follow my team 99% of the time on TV. They may stink on the field but their TV broadcasters are second to none. The Mets organization for years has never worked on building their radio network. The Red Sox on the other hand have recently added other radio outlets in this area including WIZR and WCKL. I think there will be a larger audience for WOFX with the Bosox since Red Sox fans in this area can not watch their team on TV due to the ridiculous MLB blackout rules. I won’t miss Howie Rose(can’t stand his “put it in the books” closing)and the personality challenged Wayne Hagin. And when the Sox play the Yankees there will be a local radio alternative to that showboat Sterling.

Yes, this news did come out a few days ago. I just wanted to see what other members of this site thought about it and some discussion of what station might pick up the Mets.

That's sad, the only station that carries the Mets is WFAN. As you know, WFAN has a good signal at night where they Carries the Mets. Remember when WKIP-AM in Poughkeepsie dumped the Mets? That was back in the 90's when WKIP-AM was the flagship station for the Mets.

I am really disappointed with attitudes displayed in some of these replies. I was hoping for some thoughtful comments and what others thought about any propects of they think might pick up the Mets. I will point out I am not a sports fan and don't listen to play by play at all.

I have no up-to-date information to add, but let me share some historical persective. I lived in the Capital District in the mid-to-late 80's, and in those days, here were the Mets affiliates, according to my notes from the time:

1984: WWCN-1460
1985: WWWD-1240
1986-87: WWWD-1240 and WPTR-1540
1988-90: WPTR-1540

Then I moved away.. so I lost track!

But I think WOFX has been the Capital District's home for the Mets since 2007 -- and I believe in that time it may have comprised the entire Mets "radio network" with WFAN.

I now live in the Midwest, and listen to the Mets (WFAN) via satellite radio and the MLB app on my iPhone. Times have certainly changed!

You think that's a sad thing for the Mets... have you taken a look at their finances lately?

Didn't 980 carry baseball PBP back in their WTRY days?

Don't know if this has any bearing on the WOFX switch, but there are rumors of flagship station realignment in New York in the next few years. The Yankees just resigned with WCBS, but only for a season or two, so as to coincide with the expiration of the Mets agreement with WFAN. Some say the Yanks will then move to WFAN and the Mets may end up on 1050-ESPN. BTW, I'm old enough to remember the Amazin Mets on WGY with Ralph Kiner, Lindsey Nelson and Bob Murphy.

That would be bad news for Mets fans. I remember when WFAN was on 1050 back in the 80's before acquiring 660 from General Electric's WNBC. Their nighttime pattern made it difficult to hear in the mid Hudson Valley. I can’t understand why the Mets don’t build out a radio network; they could use the money.

That would be for one season only. Next fall should be quite interesting in the New York baseball radio landscape.

And it's not a "gimme" that the Mets would end up on 1050 ESPN - but it is a baseball franchise whose live coverage they could benefit from. Don't know how the Amazins coexisting on the same radio station as the Michael Kay (Voice of the Yankees) radio show is going to fly, though. ::)
