WOGL albums up until 2002...

This is slightly radio related. Why do stations like WOGL and WCBS no longer produce music compilations any more, most recently on cd? Is it licensing issue or just the lack of anyone buying cd's anymore due to internet and i-pods?

Having worked in music retail until 2010, i know there is a market for oldies/old-school music. The problem seems to be too many compliations with the same tracks. By now, most people have the hits. They are looking for rarer songs and the licencing is probably cost prohibative or in dispute.

Even Butterball stopped releasing compliations, and those sold better than some recent titles.

If someone had the money to get better tracks, and priced the CDs competitavely, they could still sell.

Just about anything is releasable, contested monies are collected and held in escrow by SoundExchange. The problem is retailers, and duplication of currenlty held libraries. But with the move to '70s tunes, they should rethink and take a second look. Many of those songs have been out of circulation for years (like the Rhino "Have A Nice Day" series) and were on indie labels, not to mention one-hit-wonders. They're hard to find. And who says they have to be on CD? Why not logo-ized thumb drives? 20 songs in high quality .wav format would fit easily.

The only place I know successfully releasing new ones (with great quality) is www.ericrecords.com. Their "Hard To Find 45" series is pretty good. Where else can you find Five Flight Up "Do What You Wanna Do" or Procol Harem "Whiter..," (45 version) in Stereo? Tasty. Plan B would be for them to sell them from their website direct mail. The CBS O&O's in major cities ordered the same discs from Collectables with the same tunes, but with different covers for each city, cutting costs. The Geator's made a cottage industry of it for years.
