WOGL an 80s station?

Hi Miguelito. Great post above. I have actually heard them play Amy Grant about a year ago. They played her for about 6 months and then stopped. I think she could be played on the WOGL and this would work. I think the two songs that would are Baby, Baby and Every Heartbeat.

As far as WCAU-FM, that was also my fave radio station growing up. You were right, they had a very tight playlist. The last 2 years, they did a mid-day show with Richard Hawkins called Hits of the 80s at lunch time. They would play older songs there for an hour. I did also like Eagle 106. To me that was a much better radio station that Q102. Q102 was more dance based and the Eagle was top 40. They played much more variety.

In the deep hazy memories of three decades back, I seem to recall it feeling like WCAU had adjusted a bit, seemingly more towards Power 99's direction....but memories are funny things. And I was more an Eagle listener with 98 the secondary choice. (Same was true for Z106...so there's that. Electric was painful, except for the weather jingle.)

I literally hated Q102 back then. I wanted to hear music from across genres. And I also wanted to hear music played at the correct speed!

WHCN Hartford played "Walking in Memphis" a couple of hours ago, no problem fitting in with the likes of "Blinded by the Light" and "What I Like About You" on that station's '70s/'80s/very early '90s classic hits playlist. I can't see the Dion or Grant songs as a good fit at all, and the Santana hit is far too recent. Of course, if WOGL is willing to go all the way to the dawn of the new millennium, "Smooth" might work there, but this thread seems to indicate that the station is pulling back from the '90s.

Santana is probably going to be the only contender. The rest are weak and probably don't test well.

To me it is not close. Ben FM is a Much Better 80s station. They actually play variety, where WOGL plays the same tired safe 80s songs. Don't get me wrong, WOGL has a better presentation, but the music is far superior at least to me on Ben FM. I am not sure if anyone else agrees. I think if Ben FM had the money to fully compete with WOGL, they could dethrone them. I do know that WOGL is much higher ratings, but I feel like Beasley puts their money into WMMR and WMGK.

People who like actual variety are rare. People who believe a station that plays hundreds (not thousands) of songs they like, rather than some songs they like and a bunch of clunkers they either don't remember or never liked when they were new, think that station IS playing a great variety. That's why the "safe" stations win.
