As a "Green Horn" radio guy about 15 years ago, I had the torture/pleasure of having to follow "Big Ron" on the air in Denver. I say torture as I knew the enormity (pardon the pun) of Ron, BUT, I also learned quickly of the generousity, the passionate, the normalcy of "Big Ron O'Brien!" Ron took this little green horn under his wing immediately, and I learned VOLUMES in a very short amount of time. What a consumate pro, friend, and co-worker. If you didn't get the chance to know "Big Ron," you missed a great one!!! I hope he and "Mom" are watching baseball with their scoring sheets EVERY day!

When I started at the 99X/New York Music Dept. in 1974, Big Ron was the very first jock whose request lines I answered. He was extremely nice to me, a kid just starting his radio career. We reconnected several times over the years, and he was still the same friendly, down-to-earth person (nice enough to send me a bunch of his homemade CDs with "oh wow" songs). I think Ron may hold the record for working at more legendary stations than anyone. He will be very missed, as an incredible radio talent, but most of all, as a good person. My condolences to all his friends & co-workers. Please keep his mom in your thoughts, too. I believe she had moved to Philadelphia to be near her son (before his sudden illness).

Is this the same Ron O'Brien that hosted a show called On the Radio on CHR stations back in the day?

I remember listening as a 8 yr old kid to this incredible jock. He worked here in Atlanta @ WQXI. This is indeed a sad day for me.. I never had the chance to hear him on WOGL. Night time here in the BIG A was never indeed the same without Big Ron Screaming, " This is Big Ron O Brien COOKIN on Quxie.." God speed, we will miss you and thank you for being just one of many who made me decide that Radio was what I really wanted to do with my life.

Life was good when Ron was one of the "Men from Big 10" WCFL. Ron wasn't a "screamer," but an enthusiastic "shouter" -- and among the best in the business.

He loved radio as much as scoring the Phillies and from KFI to WPGC, from WFIL to KIIS, WQXI to Super 'CFL and a lot more in between, Ron was talent and a damn good one.

"Oldies 98" WOGL has lost another legend, and at 56, much too soon.

Sad.

Such a shocker, Ron was one of my all time favorite joks. I still remember him from CFL. I stopped to visit at WOGL two years ago and to swap a few stories; just the nicest most gracious radio legend I've ever met. And his show on WOGL was great. My condolences to his friends and family. We've certainly lost one of the real radio legends much too early.

Never worked with him, but it was my pleasure to bump into him a couple of times along the radio road, and on both occasions, he was extremely pleasant, and of course, very funny. Making "best" arguments in this large and talent-filled business is always risky, but it could certainly be argued that during his days at WCFL/Chicago in the mid-70's, he might have been the best Top 40 jock in the nation. Consistently energetic, original, very clever and humorous. Just the best!!!!!

Rest in peace, Ron. You made radio better and many of us better by just being around you.

Big Ron was one of the kindest guys in radio. I've had the pleasure to work with him several times in my career and he was the personification of the word "gentleman" my condolances to his family, may he be the afternoon boss jock at the big radio station in the sky!

I first met Rich when he was still a senior at Tech and pulling a split shift at KBAB/Indianola.
That's when he showed me how to run the board for my very first radio job.
Ten years later, during my tenure at KRBE, he used me as a reference (My proudest moment in radio).
Finally, in the 90's, both of us working at One Bala... me the 3rd floor, he the 2nd.
I will miss the "Ayatollah of Rock'N'Rollah".

Sad news I enjoyed Big Ron on 104.5 back in the 90's my best goes out to his family and friends in these tough times. Rip Big Ron.

It was the summer of 1975, but I remember it like it was yesterday:

"Hellooooooo, Mother...Six O'Clock, and Big Ron is back at the Voice of Labor..."

Big Ron is one of the reasons I got in the biz. R.I.P...

Whats so eerie about this...is Big Ron use to follow Jack Armstrong on KFI for a short time in the early 80's. 2 great legends on the same station back to back and less then 1 month from each other.

Anytime I have had the pleasure of meeting Big Ron he was very cordial and one of the last "radio legends that didn't act like he was bigger than his britches". This is the second dark day in radio in as many months and Philly, well... we were blessed to have him for as long as we did.

God rest your soul, Big Ron.
