WOGL playing more motown and soul?

I'm in the Poconos and don't get in WDAS, but listen to WOGL all the time. Recently, I noticed a little more motown and soul music being played (four tops, diana ross, marvin gaye, ect) I mean they're still playing plenty of 70s and (got help me) 80s, just a lot more soulful sixties hits. Anyone else notice this?

Are they perhaps a little worried about WDAS-AM? If not, they should be!

I have also noticed, especially after the new year that it sounded a little more like WOGL right after they stopped using the "Oldies" identifier. More traditional Oldies were put on back to back with less of the Classic Rock/Hits type songs.

PLEASE.....an AM station? Give me a break. If OGL is reacting to this station, that's ridiculous.

I agree, the other day we were listening to WDAS on WISX HD 2 in my car radio, the wife told me she was somewhat tired of the station and switched it to WOGL only to head the same 4tops song. WOGL is playing more 60's soul.

It's a brand new year. Given their history, WOGL should be deleting certain 60's and early 70's songs and making way for more 80's songs, correct?

Are you saying that because of a tiny AM station that the average listener knows nothing about that WOGL is actually ADDING OLDER songs to their regular rotation in 2012?

It makes no sense. They certainly didn't start adding "real oldies" to their rotation when WPGR or Oldies 950 went off the air.

If there is something to this, it must have to do with demographics. They're obviously not concerned with losing white baby boomers, that ship sailed a long time ago. But are they genuinely concerned about losing their older inner city black listeners?

Hearing a Four Tops song on WOGL doesn't seem to indicate there's more soul being played in and of itself. It would take something a bit more comprehensive than random examples to show just how extensive any changes are.

You mean...It's The Same Old(ies) Song on WOGL? ;)

I surely HOPE they don't add more 80s to the playlist. Lord kill me if I hear more songs like "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John. Maybe it's just the personalities on air selecting the Motown songs I'm hearing more of, but it does sound like there is more of them in the average rotation.

I don't know when you guys are hearing more black music on WOGL, but when i turn them on, i hear more pop/rock than usual. Even Pantano has played more 80's dance in the last 2 weeks than i'm used to hearing on his show.

I guess listening is in the ear of the beholder.

The playlist does seem to be a bit more balanced now than in the recent past, when it was very 70's-intensive. The amount of 80's music seems about the same. Perhaps the older skew could be in response to WBEB dropping the 70's.

Thanks for posting the list and reminding me again why I don't listen to WOGL. So the oldest song they play is "Stand By Me" from 1961 followed by "Do You Love Me" from 1962. Nothing from 1960 or 1963. It's interesting to note that many of the titles were hits a second time around due to movie releases a generation or two later. Obviously if it weren't for the movie of the same title, "Stand By Me" would have been shelved decades ago. The same goes with the movie "Ghost" and "Unchained Melody." What film featured "Do You Love Me?" Was it Dirty Dancing?

Yep - Dirty Dancing from 1987. I don't listen to WOGL as much as I used to (smartphone, unlimited data, and a line in jack), but whatever they are doing is working for them. Hell, the PPM data from WOGL is what convinced CBS to bring CBS-FM back, albeit in a modified form.

In addition to Do You Love Me being in a later movie, so was Stand By Me. So basically, they are a 70's and 80's station.

It's still the same old boring, overplayed songs. Nothing exciting to make you want to listen to WOGL for any length of time.
My i-pod has a better library than what 'OGL offers.

Anyone's iPod has a "better" library than a given station, because it tends to be so personalized. Not possible with radio. You can leave out whatever you happen to dislike, add more of what interests you---but the person next to you with their iPod might feel the exact opposite about what's "boring," "old" or "overplayed."

This discussion is PRECISLEY why music is slowly leaving FM and going to alternative delivery systems. Nowadays EVERYONE can be their own PD. Why listen to over the air music radio with the songs being chosen by someone else, when you can assemble your own digital music library on an I-Pod or MP3, or choose from the countless music streams on the internet that play the exact music you're looking for, depending on the day and your mood? When radio was the ONLY music option, it sounded a whole lot better. People's dissatisfaction with radio has increased as more personalized choices become available with new media. Radio is in the business of BROADCASTING, not narrowcasting!
