WOGL Playlist

Hello. Can you please explain to me why WOGL is still playing 3 60s songs an hour, when every other CBS Station is spinning 1-2 tops. KHITS and WOCL Sunny is playing maybe 1 60s every other hour. I do not want to hear that it is a heritage station...because WCBS and KRTH have been around longer and both are only playing 1 60s song an hour. I think it would be wiser by hitting a younger 35-54 target demo by playing 4-5 80s songs an hour and cutting back to 1 60s song an hour. If they do this, they would get younger and would blow BEN-FM out of the water. The other question I have been pondering, is why most of the their 60s songs motown? Don't get me wrong, I like motown but they completely ignore 80s R&B. There were some really good 80s R&B artists...such as Gregory Abbott, New Edition, Janet Jackson, Rockwell, Bobby Brown, Whitney Houston, Oran Juice Jones etc. Please enlighten me on this. Thank you.

To know why they have that particular blend, you'd have to get access to the internal research that WOGL does on its library with its target audience.

Considering that the station averaged #5 in 25-54 in the first 3 months of 2014, they don't seem to be hurting.

That is a good point David, but wouldn't they like to be 1 or 2 and have a younger audience then what they already have. They could do what KRTH and WOMC does by playing all 50s and 60s on one of their HD Channels. Then, they could focus more on the late 70s to late 80s and maybe through in a 90s song a few times a day. As far as BEN-FM is concerned, they are around 2-3 share a month...and WOGL would at the very least stay with the numbers they have but have a younger audience. I would like them to play some of 80s r&b i discussed above and also play the likes of Teena Marie - LoverGirl, Ready for the World, Jermaine Stewart and maybe throw in an 80s hairband other than Bon Jovi...maybe Whitesnake, Poison and Bad English. Like I said, I like 60s music, I just think they will increase their share and get younger if they played more 80s and less 60s. The DJ's on the station are definitely top notch.

That is a good point David, but wouldn't they like to be 1 or 2 instead of just a top 5 average and at the same time get younger. They could play 50s and 60s on one of their HD channels. If they could play the artists above and also include Jody Watley, Teena Marie(LoverGirl), Paula Abdul, Jermaine Stewart...i think this would definitely increase their share and also increase younger part of the 35-54 audience. I do like motown, I just think they would be better off playing more 80s and 1 60s per hour. They would also take the 2-3 share that Ben-FM has. Maybe even include a few hair bands besides the Bon Jovi they play(Whitesnake, Poison, Bad English etc.) I do have to say, they have amazing DJ's.

Hello David. you make a great point, but wouldn't they rather be 1 or 2 than just in the top 5. Secondly, I think that if they cut to 1 60s song an hour and 4-5 80s songs...they would get a younger 25-54 audience and would take the 2-3 share that Ben-FM has. Look at KOLA-FM in Riverside has done since they pretty much play 80s music. I would also like to see them play the 80s r&b artists I mentioned above, plus Jermaine Stewart, Bell Biv Devoe, Paula Abdul, Teena Marie(LoverGirl), The Gap Band, Jody Watley etc. I still don't understand why classic hits ignore 80s r&b and only focus on 60s r&b.

Well, with the latest ratings out today, WOGL is #2, so you could say they're doing something right.

CBS, as a group however, has fallen behind Greater Media. Clear Channel leads the pack with its five FMs and one AM; the #2 group is Greater Media with its four FMs; followed by CBS with its two FMs and three AMs. Beasley comes in fourth; and Radio One fifth.

Hello David. you make a great point, but wouldn't they rather be 1 or 2 than just in the top 5. .

Keep in mind that stations sell on delivery, not rank. So stations with roughly similar audience delivery will tend to sell at roughly similar billing levels. There is no "win" or "loose" in this...

Wouldn't WOGL still prefer to attract the younger end of the demo. To me the same 60s music they have been playing for almost 30 years is attracting the older part of the demo. I have nothing against 60s music. I tend to like some 60s music as well...but if you look at other CBS Stations, they are playing a lot more 80s music than this station is. They could be playing the music I mentioned above. Does it have anything to do with Ben-FM playing 2/3 80s music? Is Ben-FM blocking WOGL from playing more 80s? IThey are the only classic hits station playing 3 60s song an hour. KRTH, KHITS, KLUV, KOOL,WOMC, WCBS, WRBQ and WOCL all play 4-5 80s songs and maybe 1 60s song an hour.

I'm trying to remember my Philly radio history...seems to me at some point (maybe the 80s) a lot of those artists got played by an R&B station rather than a Top 40 station. Usually a classic hits station tries to duplicate the playlist the local people remember from area Top 40 stations, and those artists might not have been included. Whereas 60s Motown and James Brown were probably included. I know Philly is a bit more traditional than some other places.

Realistically, how would what Ben does block OGL? If they want to go for that audience, they just add more '80s.

I think WOGL is afraid that they are going to split the audience and in turn have lower ratings. I think the opposite would happen and they would get better ratings...but even if they were to get a little lower ratings they would def have a younger following which would be better for the 25-54 demo.

I guess WOGL would rather play 60s motown instead of 80s r&b, new wave and hair bands...since they play a lot of 60s music. They are by far the slowest classic hits station to evolve. I think I mentioned this before, they are only classic hits CBS station around the country that plays at 3 60s an hour when all of the other classic hits stations play 1 or none. I really believe they should evolve in 98.1 Hot Hits in the 80s or the late 80s and early 90s WEGX Eagle 106.

Another slow-to-evolve station is Clear Channel's WTRY-FM Albany, NY. Its last 12 songs played included three from the '60s ("Respect," "Summer in the City" and "Light My Fire") and two from 1970 ("Oye Como Va" and "Up Around the Bend"). Its most-played song this week has been "Stand By Me." And they still call themselves Oldies 98.3! I suppose they'll evolve in time -- hey, they're actually playing Hall & Oates' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" in addition to the Righteous Brothers' original -- but I get up to Albany a few times a year and always feel like I've driven into a time warp when I tune to 98.3.
