WOGL Rebrands at Big 98.1

This, as well as brand perception; sometimes a refreshed brand can do a lot for a station even if the music hasn't changed drastically, especially if they found that the WOGL brand had a negative connotation with the target demo they're going for (25-54).

I don't mean to downplay the significance of a heritage brand getting replaced after 30+ years, but it could help turn the station around.

P.S. just for grins and giggles, do we think the callsign will change?
As I read this very interesting thread about refreshing and rebranding, I can’t help but think of Sid Mark’s Sinatra show that focused on the music of one man for over 6 decades. Obviously there’s a limited amount of rebranding that can be done within those confines. And as we learn that the Dance Party has been nixed from WOGL, it’s worth noting that it was announced last Sunday that the Sinatra show will continue with old tapes of Sid Mark even after his passing. I think this is a good example that in life, some models need an occasional update while others have proven to stand the test of time.

Oh yeah... and now AC/DC "Back in Black" is considered what. classic rock and classic hits, since WOGL plays it?
Not surprising when you consider WOGL is facing stiff competition from WMGK and WBEN, both of which play that song and others that are more classic rock. The eyebrow raiser for me was "All Apologies" by Nirvana being spun yesterday around 1:17.

I would agree, but only to an extent. WPHT is certainly not aiming for a younger audience and I can't imagine it costs them much to air two or three hours of a recorded show. I have no doubt the day will eventually come where Audacy can sell that timeslot to a brokered program that will pay more. It has less to do with what stands the test of time, but moreso balancing risk vs. reward.

If you look at what they've played even just from midnight to this minute, it looks like they have a handful of songs (nothing particularly recent) in surprisingly high rotation. Titles from today that might be instructive could be "Another Night," a straight-up Euro Dance/Pop record from 1994, "Gonna Make You Sweat" by C + C Music Factory, "It Takes Two" by Rob Base & E-Z Rock, and "Busta Move" by Young M.C. "Semi Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind isn't so terribly old either. I know that a few of these songs have been in rotation for a bit but I don't think I've ever seen so many "newer" titles on the station in such a relatively short time span.

Phil Collins and Genesis must test really well around here. Phil has always rubbed me the wrong way (irrational, I know) so it was a problem for me that The Breeze seemingly played him once every 90 minutes. Now it looks like Big 98.1 is in a groovy kinda love with him.

I don't know much about Phil personally, but like a lot of big musical acts, there was something that changed about him once he left Genesis in 1989. Otherwise, I really loved his songs.

You really showed your true colors there.

Looking at the recently played playlists online, it looks like they have a power rotation playing some songs as much as what seems to be four times a day. It seems to be confirmed as I have heard "Summer of '69" multiple times since the rebrand. This definitely isn't the kind of station that you're going to want to listen to for more than short periods in the car. I can't see this being a very good 'in-office' station. What is the reasoning behind playing certain songs like that so many times in one day on a classic hits station? I mean I kinda know the answer already, but I'm still curious what you all think.

In an office…heck, in a home office for many people….no one is tracking it that closely. Phone calls, distractions, breaks…no one is counting if they heard too many BrHan Adams songs. It’s background noise, and if some is noting that they heard something at 8 am and again at 6 pm, I’d be more concerned they don’t have enough work to do.
