I have to disagree. No matter what WPEN does...change the signal, 24/7 music, personalities, whatever...they will never beat WOGL. 98 can drop the word "oldies," but the fact of the matter is with more than a decade under their belt, most people will continue to think of them as Oldies 98. And quite frankly, "Oldies 950"--should someone happen to stumble by it--sounds like what most people still think 98 sounds like. I'm not taliing message board type, just average listeners.

Moreover, while there can be places for niche formatted music to still work on AM, no AM music station in a major market will supplant an FM when the perception (and perception=reality) is that there's an FM version.

Agreed on your post. WPEN will most likely never beat WOGL. WOGL is much better anyway. Being on FM is enough for them to beat WPEN.

That day will come when 98.1 WOGL plays doo wop and 50's rock in the regular rotation. just sayin, is all.

And that day is...1987!

Re: WOGL In 1990

I don't know. I dubbed an aircheck from 1990 of Don Cannon's first day and the first half hour of Bobby Sharp and I did not hear any doo wop. I did enjoy listening to the 1990 sound of WOGL and it was a Motown Monday and I heard some songs on Motown that I have not heard in years.

The doo-wop that I remember in regular rotation were the songs that were national chart hits - In The Still of The Night, Get A Job, etc. rather than the "Philly favorites" Holiday might play. Very early WOGL played only national hits while rival Solid Gold 102 played more doo-wop and regional hits. After WIOQ left the format, WOGL added more of the Philadelphia sound when Holiday, Hyski, Mike St. John, Bob Pantano, etc. came on board.

What was the line-up of DJs on WOGL in 1987? I remember Glen Kalina stayed around for a bit, Bill O'Brien was doing afternoons the first few days. Who was doing mornings, mid-days, etc. I had pretty much abandoned 98 before the format flip in the summer of 1987 and started listening to Eagle 106. I only tuned in to 98 just to hear what the new format sounded like. Thanks.
