WOGL had another competitor for a while. From November 1987 to January 1989, 102.1 WIOQ was Oldies. In fact, 98.1 was still WCAU-FM playing Top 40 when WIOQ began its oldies format. Days later, CBS Radio flipped WCAU-FM to WOGL. Within a matter of days, Philadelphia went from having no Oldies on FM, to having two FM Oldies stations. At the time, I didn't notice any difference between WOGL and WIOQ's Oldies playlists. Maybe someone knows if there were any differences.
This was 98.1's second run at the Oldies format. WCAU-FM had been Oldies from 1970 to 1975. Then it returned to Oldies/Classic Hits as WOGL from November 1987 to the present.
WOGL, thanks to CBS Radio's experience with the Oldies format, got the upper hand over WIOQ. After a little over a year, WIOQ gave up Oldies for Slightly Rhythmic Top 40. (I remember WIOQ played pop artists who had songs with a rhythmic feel, such as "People Gotta Move" from Gino Vanelli.)
