WOGL's #1 A - Z Labor Day Special

I didn't listen for long, but it was good to hear some tunes they don't normally play. The oldest song I heard on the special was Runaround Sue by Dion & The Belmonts from 1961. The newest song I heard was Look Away by Chicago from 1988.

All together, I probably only heard about 45 minutes of the whole thing. So my question is, does anyone know if they actually played EVERY #1 hit from 1960 to 1989?

If they did, that would include Wonderland By Night by Burt Kaempfert and Calcutta by Lawrence Welk to Sweet Child Of Mine from Guns N' Roses and Bad Medicine from Bon Jovi. Talk about a wide spectrum of music over the span of just 29 years. Were these songs and artists included?

And I wonder how many #1 songs there were from 1960 to 1989. Any thoughts on the special?

I didn't listen to much either, but let me just say, and I was thinking about starting a topic about this...but anyway I think they did play just about every #1 hit (i'm sure a few wern't) because they even played Christmas music a few times. Infact when I first tuned in on Friday afternoon around 5:00, I thought for a second the station was stunting, cause the first song I heard was Santa Claus is coming to town. I guess August 31st would be the new record for a station going all Christmas.

Anyway while I appreciated ogl's dedication to accuracy on playing all the #1's, I couldn't help but think I don't think anyone would mind in August if they skipped over Christmas songs that were #1's.

Yes.com didn't log any of those songs in the last cycle of the countdown (Saturday through Monday), though it has been known to miss some. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if the station took liberties with the actual list -- ignoring songs that just sound way out of the format. Yes.com didn't seem to log Hello Dolly or I Will Follow Him, either. And who says Santa Claus is Coming To Town was a Number One? Not in my book. I wonder if this was Christmas filler from when the station ran the same special on Christmas week and someone forgot to take it off the playlist.

On another point, it's interesting that this time OGL suspended the special overnight, something they didn't do when they did the same special during Christmas week. Since there was almost exactly 48 hours of programming, suspending the special overnight prevented the music from recycling every other day in the same dayparts. Good move this time.

I did hear Sweet Child of Mine by Guns N' Roses during the A-Z special. When I tuned in, I actually thought that they had switched formats because I never would consider that song to be a "classic hit"

They probably left songs off again this year. I listened last year when they excluded some #1's while playing #1's from the christmas chart. That is why I don't bother listening to any of their countdowns anymore.

IMO, If they're gonna include #1 songs from a specialty chart, they should include #1 Country/Dance/R&B and other format Chart Toppers.
