WOHF 92.1 "The Wolf" - Format Change

captbob said:
Gentlemen, I just found this site and am very happy to read about my old station WNRR. But first let me say I'm surprised that LEC made the change they did. Sure, sports was a big deal for the listeners but all the time? the number one thing was local news and localized programing, weather, community events and such. looks like LEC has gone the way of all the consolidated stations both in Ohio and here in Naples, Florida where I live.

That's where WLEC botched it... big time. And even if in a "dream scenario" of sorts - new ownership (cause not-so-GoodRadio.tv ain't happening), new management (perhaps it's time for Hugg and company to depart after a nice, long run at "the Hut") and an infusion of money and resources (yeah, a "dream" scenario) - I can't see WLEC recovering from this move. Even a year later.

At least in 1997, WEOL/930 had the foresight to know that their MOR format was starting to fade. So... like WLEC, their strength was local news and local programming, but they played it to the hilt instead with an all-news format (along with AP All News Radio) during the day WITH sports/talk (One-on-One Sports) at night. Yes, they've evolved since into a standard news/talk station, but WEOL never really has alienated their audience the way WLEC did.

Having found that this 92.1 format change is still a topic of "conversation"....I had to register a make a post. I would have to believe that Jim Lorenzen/DC/and maybe "Captain Bob" still has interest as to why and what went wrong with this format change! But, when I my former radio name and success of the past gets brought onto "forums" .... I feel it necessary to partake. I appreciate these forums are brought forward to continue to share the stories of radio and the success stories that brought everyone here! But at some point, can we all appreicate why it is that we are here rather then try to use a "screenname" to talk about the past and who is doing right and who is doing wrong?!?!? Guys...it's RADIO! Let's enjoy it and stop the junior high smack talk already!!! Thank you ... if I can comment on behalf of my old partner Dave Searfoss, the father of my children (Kent Smith) and myself for allowing us to be part of the "LEGEND" of northcoast OHIO RADIO!!! The WOLF and THE EAGLE have a lot of programming issues... if we are here to discuss the WOLF and format changes, then have their PD figure out how to stop the dead air and constant in and outs of the piped in formats they are using....it's BAD.....and kudos to everyone on the other post pertaining to the positives of 95.3 WLKR.....ONLY wonderful things happening with this new format change!!!! Keep making posts to that site for it only continues to make this station the awesome FORMAT/STATION it has always been!!!! GO BUCKS & GO TRIBE and be sure to listen to them on 95.3 WLKR.....Sports Voice of the Firelands!!!!!

Oh....CARLOS BLAKE....that salad buffet/trade deal worked out for you.....WXKR is doing what in the TOLEDO market....more like the Port Clinton/Oak Harbor market Big Guy.....GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Uh, Sandy, no it didn't! I was there before it was XKR. I was there about 1 month interning/training, got in part time a month later then the station went under. I never got a paycheck. I believe Dan Mason was the last morning guy on there when we all got axed at W.O.S.E. He was the one who had to tell us we were done.

Sandy, nice "screenname." On one side, it's not cool to talk trash but on the other hand, this is a good forum to analyze and discuss trends, programming, and other issues in radio. What's wrong with that? It's perfectly fine to discuss radio and criticize.

WMMS during the Buzzard hey days? Now, that's "legend" material. Lanigan, Webster, and Malone? Legendary. Nev Chandler calling the Browns games? Most definitely "legendary." Gold 101 during the Boat of Prizes overmodulated days? ??? Not so much.

BIZ...or whatever...thanks for the compliments of my screenname....I've got nothing to hide so therefore put it out so everyone knows who is who, when it really matters. I have nothing to justify other then I find it complimentary to have forums still talking about SUCCESS from 10 years ago. Just figured there is a lot more going on in radio these days then for wanneabes to smack talk the past .... that's all! I enjoy the posts....keep them coming! Great stuff......by the way......are you on a payroll anywhere or just venting stress and frustrations from years gone by???

Let's see...no, I am not on a payroll anywhere. Not that it matters. I am in post-secondary education in a communications department doing research in the broadcasting field. I used to know a guy named J.D. or something like that who used to work in Clyde. That's how I heard about the boat of prizes or whatever it was. WNCG made the satellite music format very listenable.

I just think that the term "legendary" is best saved for those that truly deserve it and built a "legacy" in broadcasting. Paul Harvey, Nev Chandler, The Buzzard, John Lanigan...those folks' body of work make them legendary.

1 a: a story coming down from the past; especially : one popularly regarded as historical although not verifiable b: a body of such stories <a place in the legend of the frontier> c: a popular myth of recent origin d: a person or thing that inspires legends e: the subject of a legend <its violence was legend even in its own time — William Broyles Jr.>

BizDecision - you were not in the market at the time, yet "a guy you knew" told you about Gold 101 and the Boat of Prizes?

Seems to me that since there is so much discussion on this topic, and stories are still being told, WNCG can be considered "legendary" in the Sandusky market. Maybe they weren't The Buzzard, but we're still talking about them.

After all, isn't 92.1 WOHF - the original topic of this fine blog - trying to capture some of the magic of Gold 101 and WNCG? (magic... get it?)

....from the North Coast of Ohio, where the Heartland meets the Lake

"BizDecision - you were not in the market at the time, yet "a guy you knew" told you about Gold 101 and the Boat of Prizes?" Where did I say I wasn't in the market? I went to school nearby that was somewhat in the signal range...depending on where I drove. I knew a guy named J.D. who I swear worked at the station. Maybe I'm crazy. Who knows?

Going back to your definition of "legend"...it fits in this context then. "A myth" "historical although not verifiable" True!

Sandusky is a market?
