WOHS Moving

According to the FCC website WOHS 730 is changing their city of license to Cramerton going 10KW day and 180 watts at night from the WCGC site in Belmont. Will this be yet another station trying to take on the 50,000 watt blowtorch of the South known as WBT?

Other stations have tried, recently WXNC and WDYT, both crashed and burned without making a dent. WDYT made a good effort and had some fans but it takes time and deep pockets. Lets hope WOHS 730 does something a little different.

WOHS is former Shelby station, has been dark a couple of months now.
Talked with former longtime WOHS staff member Andy Foster yesterday at WGMA...getting ready for hernia surgery and will be out of action for a couple of weeks...

WGMA? Wow that made me take notice. I used to work at WGMA but in those days it was WGMA 1320 Hollywood, Florida. Rumor has it the calls stood for Greater Miami Area.

Anyway best of luck to WOHS whatever they decide to do. The Charlotte area seems to be lacking some strong AM signals. Most Charlotte AM stations don't seem to make it very far out of Charlotte at night except for WBT of course. Even WFNZ is rather weak in Huntersville at night and there isn't much signal for WYFQ 930 the old WSOC-AM.

They do not have a prayer with just 180 watts night. Is this the station from Shelby?

I doubt they will do worse than WDYT -- from a technical advantage, I think they will do much better than WDYT. In WOHS's favor is tower location...they will be using one of 1270 WCGC's towers in Belmont, which is several miles east of the WDYT towers in Gastonia which puts them closer to Charlotte. Also the 180 watts at night will do very well at the lower AM dial location versus WDYT at 1220 -- and WDYT only had 106 watts at night. And I doubt WOHS will contend with the background "whistle" heard on WDYT around Charlotte -- this was reportedly due to some type of anomaly from 610 WFNZ.

I agree with the last post. Their daytime signal will be pretty impressive, especially that low on the dial. As for nighttime, if they focus on the local community (Cramerton, McAdenville, Belmont) they should do okay. One thing we used to do at WCGC was to turn the station over to Belmont Abbey's campus station and let them do whatever, as long as it didn't violate any regulations. They actually broadcast from their studios via a loop line back to WCGC.

It all comes down to format. Do they try to take on 'BT? Do they go Spanish? Religious? Or do they do something completely out of the box? Classic Country? Americana?

I always thought part of the WDYT problem was also the IBOC signal from WHVN at 1240.

As for the signal on 730. We'll have to see how well it does on the WCGC tower. Even though 730 won't be directional the other WCGC towers may have an effect on the signal, might be good, might be bad. In this day and age though 180 watts isn't going to be enough power at night.

Is there a possibility that WOHS might cause the same type of interference to WRKB at 1460?

Later . . . .

Isn't that the same principle that has restricted WCHL in Chapel Hill and kind of kept them under WPTF's thumb [technically speaking] for many years?

Just curious: what type of format do you folks think could be viable on WOHS?

I would program the station for the area where the signal is dominant. Then see what format these people are willing to listen to on AM. It's no use trying to attract people who only listen to FM. I think advertiser support is a factor too. What will the local retailers support without looking at a rating book? Local merchants will often support a station they like if the advertising gets results for them. In the beginning there will be no ratings and there might not be any for quite awhile.

As a start up it can't be an expensive format and it needs to be done with a small staff. I predict it will be some kind of syndicated talk.

What usually happens is, it turns out to be another station trying to be a Charlotte station without a Charlotte signal.
