WOKV moves to 104.5 FM...now what is next for 106.5 FM & the WFYV calls?

Cox has moved all its AM Talk stations to simulcasts.

WSB Atlanta
KRMG Tulsa
WHIO Dayton
WOKV Jacksonville
WDBO Orlando

WOKV, WSB and KRMG are 50,000 watt stations. WHIO is 5000 watts up the dial at 1290. WDBO is also 5000 watts but low on the dial, at 580, so it has a good signal. The only Talk station Cox didn't give an FM simulcast, WSTC-WNLK Stamford-Norwalk CT, they sold to a local NPR station.

Only WDBO has gone the ESPN route on its AM side, leaving the Talk format by itself on FM in Orlando. Bonneville did the same thing in Seattle and Phoenix, moving the Talk format to FM and putting ESPN on the AM stations. But they didn't do it in Salt Lake City, where 50,000 watt KSL continues to simulcast on both AM and FM.

Although these days, you'd think the better move would be to leave the aging-demo Talk format on AM and put Sports on FM, to catch young men who may only listen to the FM dial.

All-News would be great on 690 but it's too costly for a market the size of Jacksonville. To do it right costs a lot and the ratings grow very slowly. Using ARN isn't much of an option. Ratings on the ARN station in Tampa are very low, even though they're trying to blend the network with local news.

As for 106.5, I doubt it will go Spanish. Cox has no Spanish-language stations. And Jacksonville is divided between Spanish-speaking immigrants from the Caribbean who want Tropical music, and from Mexico who want Regional Mexican. One station won't really serve them all. That's the same reason why ESPN Deportes makes no sense for 690. It's aimed at Mexican-American sports fans with tons of coverage of Soccer and Mexican beisbol leagues, of little interest to sports fans from the Caribbean. That's why there are so few Deportes affilates in the East, and the handful there are do poorly in the ratings.

It has been about a week and a half since WOKV FM moved from the Class A 106.5 to the Class C 104.5 but Cox still hasn't made the format flip for 106.5. What is the latest news on that matter? Are they waiting until Memorial Day weekend to flip 106.5?

what is ARN?
Also referred to as America's Radio News Network, this is a satellite delivered news/opinion format, that is affiliated with the Washington Times.

In west central and southwest Florida; much of the weekday prime hours contain ARNN on both 1200 WINK and 820 WWBA.

I had high hopes for them at first, but there seem to be very few stories covered and a lot or repetition.

I would think if WOKV were to flip to an all news format, they might be better served by doing a partnership with either the Florida Times-Union and/or one of the Jacksonville TV stations.

WINK AM in Fort Myers does have a partnership with WINK TV for local news and weather.

In a previous post, I suggested them using their sister TV station, Action News.

If they put an effort and use the resources at their disposal, I think they could make an all news station work.

And today marked the official swap of call signs as well....

WOKV-FM Atlantic Beach
WFYV Ponte Vedra Beach

This will not look right for a while though.

Cox seems to be holding on to the WFYV call sign for what ever the next format might be, but I am likely thinking 106.5 is going Soft AC/Oldies...just too much of an open hole to keep ignoring...6,000 watts is better than 0 watts of nothing.

Yes, I heard Rich Jones make the announcement as well.

@JAWilson and others who recognize a big programming hole as in a soft AC/Oldies format, remember Jacksonville has a track record of fragmenting and acting as a spoiler. My biggest fear is 106.5 will become something like Hot 106.5 - an Urban AC and/or perhaps a rhythmic AC to peel away some listeners from WSOL and for Cox to sell an Urban combo. It is after all about the $$$$. IF that happens, the ball would have to go into CC's court, not to drop Urban but to do something with their underperforming properties. In fact that ball should be there now because that cluster is a mess IMO and they have no one to blame but themselves.

You guys speak of a softer type hits station/hybrid oldies type station. Well, duh there was Magic 107.3. CC was totally short-sighted. Magic's replacement - JACK FM - is earning at least a couple shares less. Against, Eagle the two stations were often only 1 share apart. Look at how much separates the two today. The market is saying listeners are looking for something lighter. Someone has to come to that reality. If not in a few days, well then certainly in the next few months. My other big concern is Cox may not want to impact Eagle in any way. Although in Tampa, Eagle and Dove appear to have a good marriage.

Potentially, the Jacksonville radio landscape could really be grim or there could be some glimmer of hope that we can act like a normal market. I can't wait to find out what's next.

Well I hate to spoil everyone's Wheaties this morning, but I have to pass this along as I just discovered this piece of info.

Cox has made a call sign request for WHJX which was dated for yesterday. As such there will be not be an Easy 106.5. Hot 106.5 is likely the new name and will likely pair up with Power to create an Urban sales combo for Cox Media Jacksonville.

JohnJax is right....now the ball is in Clear Channel's court.

With www.myhot1065.com going Urban AC, both Joyner and Harvey morning shows are already on Clear Channel stations. I wonder whats the hold up for Rickey Smiley being put on POWER 106.1 to dominate mornings?

That is true...but Cox has the reputation of bringing on new stations with the focus on music. I am sure they will have a month-long 10,000 song promotion to welcome the new Hot 106.5. If they decided after time to bring on a talk show, it may be something local or someone we have never heard of in these parts.

If this is the direction that Cox takes, their cluster will be stronger than it was a year ago by a long shot.

Rickey Smiley plays music. A fair amount too.

Smiley would dominate 18-34 morning drive. All of Cox Urban stations have syndicated morning shows. After while, all music and no jocks will get played out.

Cox has called stations "new" for several years sometimes, so that's all relative...

I'm not saying Cox WILL or SHOULD put Smiley on, what we believe, will be the new "Hot 106.5". Especially if it was going the Urban route. Smiley is better fit for rhythmic stations. I was just pointing out that he does play music.

How about 106.5 would be rock and rap (back in the day) when Jacksonville used to have a radio station called Channel X? on 101.5 before Clear Channel pick it up? back in 90's
