WOKV World

Have you noticed “radio” has been dropped from the tagline “Newstalk Radio WOKV?” Duh – listeners know they are listening to the radio. Even subconsciously IMO listeners will feel WOKV gets to the point and doesn’t waste their time. In AM drive they can get back 20 seconds after just 10 short times not saying that word. This was a really good PPM friendly decision.

Jamie Dupree. I caught him doing talk host fill-in recently. IMO, he’s just about the best political analyst around. There is potential there for him to be an effective talk show host. One day, the talk lineup of Cox stations will change. Whether Jamie will have an expanded future role, who knows? Cox has to be thinking of a contingency plan. Not sure if being a talk show host would be of interest to Jamie but it has to make you wonder.

As far WOKV-FM moving to a full FM signal, Cox would be nuts doing so now while they still own AM 690. If the situation were reversed – weak, poor AM signal, I’d say a blow torch FM would make sense. Is the AM an asset or a liability? Surely, anything that would diminish the value of the AM would not make economic sense. If the intent is to eventually sell, I would think you'd want to keep the value high. Realistically, are there potential buyers out there who would invest in what would be an expensive AM property in a mid market like Jax? I really don’t know - thoughts?

When Cox announced it would start simulcasting WDBO on 96.5 in Orlando a few weeks ago, I speculated maybe Cox Jax might make the switch with WOKV to a more powerful FM stick. For example, to move them from 106.5 to 104.5 would give them a FULL market FM signal, but, you're right, JohnJax, they probably won't do that anytime soon. At the present time, 106.5, while not a powerful FM signal, reaches most of Jacksonville proper with enough juice to keep WOKV accessible on both AM and FM. Of course, someday, things will change, Rush will be gone, and Bortz and Hannity as well. Luckily, there are now many more conservative talk talent choices available than in years past, should they need to make adjustments. Only if, and when, WOKV gets some real News/Talk competition, with an emphasis on a strong, local news presentation, AND on FM, and they start seeing some ratings erosion, would they consider pulling the switch to place 'OKV on a stronger FM to protect their property. Of course, this is pure speculation on my part. Anyone see a different scenario?

Whoops! Meant, Boortz, not Bortz. Didn't he used to play the Borscht Belt? Or is that the Boortz Belt? That's enough for this serious post!

Taking a wrong turn, we stumbled on a WOKV remote with Clark Howard in Nocatee yesterday. I’m not into financial shows and this would not have been something I would have attended. But, it turned out to be quite interesting including even Nocatee itself.

WOKV signs were placed in the all the right places, including where to park etc. so even the directionally challenged would have been fine. It shows they are pros in doing remotes right.

Before Clark arrived, I talked to a number of WOKV employees who seemed as enthusiastic about their station as they were of Nocatee. They promoted both and I thought a sponsor and an employer couldn’t ask for anything more. It’s an interesting place. If you are ever there, check out Splash. Pretty awesome!

What I found surprising were the number of females in attendance. Perhaps my bad but I just assumed financial talk would be of more interest to men. I chatted with some of the folks around me and it seems the wives dragged their husbands to the event. We ran into someone we knew and his wife. She (in her late 20’s) is a big Clark Howard fan. Who knew?

Overall, I’d say mid 40’s was the average age. But there were a number of younger folks too. News/Talk long had a long reputation for appealing to older demos. I had to wonder just how much FM helped deliver people like our friend’s wife.

The personal high point for me was meeting PD Mike Dorwart. I have long admired Mike’s commitment to excellence and I told him that and more. Mike acknowledged reading these boards but does not comment. That’s understandable. Funny thing was a specific trip to Nocatee was not planned but the nicest surprises often come when you least expect them!

Clark Howard is not a financial show so much as a consumer show, hence it would draw more women than a more financially focused show, i.e. stocks, bonds, investment etc. ala Dave Ramsey. I'd call howard "Soft Finance" with a consumerist bent.

Nocatee is nice, would've been interesting to see it's growth had not the economy sunk into it's imitation of 1932 or so.

?Se habla ingles en la ciudad de Nocatee? iQue interesante!

WOKV is a very successful station, but their FM has holes in their signal. It is one of the weakest FMs in town, but it gets the job done. The AM's huge signal, covering every inch of the market, and well into GA and SC all the way into NC, brings them a lot of money. The Jaguars alone, with all the revenue they get from blacked-out games, gives them a lot of money.

....but oh that AM pattern change at night!! Anyone in Bermuda enjoying WOKV at night??? ;)

Spoke with WOLV's PD last week.. no plans to put WOKV-FM on a higher-power frequency - none are available, anyway, But wow how EXCELLENT WDBO-FM sounds and has a killer 100kW signal. Goes as far as the entry to S.Jax and then dies quickly.

Generally speaking, it is a common practice that the program director, general manager and staff would have no knowledge of any major plans until the executive corporate management is ready to implement any such changes, modifications, or improvements within the cluster. This is to avoid any such information leaking to staff, competition and the general public, but mainly to keep it confidential from the competition and general public.

Yes, of course you are correct. I believe there are at least 2 FM signals WOKV could take... anyway, I prefer NPR. No screaming at people, no daily bashing of liberals (and I'm no liberal), and no 20 minutes of commercials an hour!

But they'd better move before radio dies out altogether - HD Radio is like AM stereo was (WOKV doesn't even have an HD that with its current format), and unless I'm in the car, my radio is OFF - unless I listen online.

Just my *opinion.*
