WOLD LP Oldies 107.9

Just goes to show you WHAT good, exciting radio can sound like when done properly. Way to go WOLD. LPFM kicking some butt I'll bet.

Classic case of professionals who worked for others, observed what they did wrong and resolved to fix it with their own station.

Serious question: what is it, exactly, that they have fixed?

I listened for a little bit right now, and have heard 3 songs in a row that I did not recognize. I was one of those kids who listened to my local top 40 station from about '56 to the very early 60's and made my own list of the chart, so I have heard some rather minor hits and a lot of stiffs.

I also heard the jock steppin' all over the tips and tails of the songs in rather horrible fashion.

Finally, right now, I heard a song I knew. But I suspect that the problem they have "fixed" is to provide a radio station for those over 70.

(It is, however, a good use for an LPFM... doing something that commercial radio can't do)

TJ Lubinsky hosts a show on Friday nights (via ISDN, I presume). They definitely skew older.

WOLD can be a formidable station in that they will get attention by playing an expanded oldies playlist but I would still with songs that made it to the top twenty on the charts. That gives you thousands of songs to play.

Just because a song made it into the Top 20 doesn't mean it got airplay in South Jersey. In fact, it's very likely that a large number of those songs didn't get enough airplay to make an impression on listeners at the time. Therefore, playing them now serves no purpose.

People who understand the charts know that you don't program an oldies station based on chart position. You program it based on impressions and recollection. Two very different things.
