Anyone see the latest hype on the WOLF, as witnessed on a few paltry billboards found on a highway near you.

"WOLF 99.5... A WHOLE 'NOTHER ANIMAL"

Um, no. It's the same neutered beast on heartworm medication that it has always been for years. Come on, Johnny Boy. This is how you are setting up your legacy? Same sappy, crossover muzak. No pulse, no voice, no life. Man, real country radio. Ah, those were the days. :-\

They might as well stick a degree marker next to that 99.5, and call it "'Nother white meat"...

30 East before Beckley... and stupid looking too. My son could have colored that thing better.

MY Grandaughter already did.:) "A whole 'nother animal": a stray puppy.

obviously you've never met Sebastian...or had to deal with him.

And Romer... you never had to deal with him ever. Quit being an ass.

Sebastian is a killer programmer and a good dude.

We miss him in Nashville.

The preceeding was an appeal for an interview and move:)

Wow... "killer" and "good" in the same sentence. What is wrong with this picture? ??? :p

Not really. I just don't like when people who don't know what they are talking about such as bitter WSIX/Nashville weekenders/fill-in guys like Chris Romer who think they have the inside dope on someone they never worked with. I am also tired of the Sebastian-bashing that occurs on the web. People love to hate John, but nobody ever really knows John. He's a really cool guy who loves radio, has a great ear for music, and knows what people want to listen to. Is he arrogant? Sure, that's why he's great at what he does. Is he tough as nails? Absolutely. He makes those who work with him as good as he is. It takes that kind of discipline to win, and win he does. He also created an incredible radio station up here in Nashville that I was very proud to be a part of from the beginning. Listen for good things on 99.5 in Dallas.

It's funny/sad, how a lot of managers in this business get a bad rap for actually managing. Many of these disgruntled former employees develop an axe to grind through their own ineptitude... they screw up then get mad at their "evil a-hole boss" for calling them on it. Either that, or the scenario you just described, where a board-op/weekender is bitter because the guy running the show has so much on his plate that he doesn't always have time for them (which, honestly, is what APDs are for anyway). Newsflash: it's not about YOU, it's about the PRODUCT!

OH GOOD NIGHT PEOPLE! To your corners, please.

Listen, Shell, Charles and the rest of the Sebastian homers out there. We you neglect to see is that we have all spoken of his expertise at one time or another, but we are not in bed with the issue either. We are pragmatically looking at this thing, and wouldn't even think about doing so, if we didn't care about this friggin market, a major market and a great market (note to Mr. Nashville).

But let's be honest... if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck... yes, it too will crap on your head from above.

I could care less you is running the WOLF (into the ground). That MARKETING CAMPAIGN blows and any professional in THAT business will tell you so.

Veritas is right. Let us not forget the common theme Sebatian has done, making a station rise in the ratings ,then cut and run before it falls. The track record is there. Chapman stuck around for a long time,so did Brinkman and a few others that made Market 5 stations a success. Let's say John is a success. Okay but why did he leave these stations relatively quick? More money?Well naturally, because loyality,or seeing his work was more of a "quick fix, than a long term solution could be the chief reason. One more thing Chapman and a few notables DID take the time to meet with weekenders. If you want true success you make sure ALL players are in place.

Jack...you really don't know if Sebastian and I conversed or not...and don't confuse sarcastic with bitter.

Unfortunately in this business too many people badmouth people they never worked with. They just hear something from a friend of a friend of a friend and the story grows and grows and grows.

At some stations weak program directors allow vindictive people to continue to trash a person’s reputation.

PS: Full timers are just as guilty.

I wouldn't bet on that. I took part in a discussion today of their new billboards. And the point was raised that they don't need a whole lot of extras on the billboard, they just need to remind people that they are there.

Part of the discussion centered on something that was new to me (because marketing isn't my 'thing') - a discussion of just what makes a 'good' billboard. And it was discussed, (by professionals who've been in this market for years, if not decades) that there's 2 main reasons to use radio billboards- intro a new station, or to build cume by driving more people to tune in. And in this case, if they remind some of those missing Wolf listeners that they're still around, and get them to flip over from KSCS or Twister or the Ranch or Cowboy 1190 or wherever it is they've been hanging out, that billboard is a success.

I asked about the KSCS billboards (because there's one still up near my house) and one of these pros had the opinion that they were a waste of money. Too much space on the board taken up by the song title (It's 5 o clock somewhere, Nothing on but the radio, etc), not enough immediate recognition that the billboard is for KSCS...

All you need is in BIG BRIGHT LETTERS: Call Letters-Logo/Frequency and a short clever or straight ahead phrase/moniker defining you.

OH YEAH... and Little, I'm glad you garnered some insight. But aside from using my chops in this biz, I use what little else I have in the marketing biz. Trust me... that board blows. It only captures the regular audience -- their own. There is no drive for new listeners, no commitment to capture their attention once they have entered the petting zoo and met the "'nother animal" and no guarantee that a cheeky phrase is going to work.

Radio stations and advertising is like that dude shelling for KABOOM. If it is loud, bright and says NEW, people tune in.
