John Sebastian did in fact git er done.

The Wolf was in fact #1 25-54 adults in January... his last month with WSM-FM.

Congrats to Sebastian and his staff at 95.5 on a job well done.

Let's hope The Wolf can keep howling into 2006 with even greater success.

Wow...remember when the Wolf debuted...how many critics were on
this board putting down the station's new format and Mr. Sebastion?
Apparently he silenced the masses with the numbers! Hey I don't
know the guy and he may be a jerk....but he's a successful jerk.

booger!

I have to admit, the Wolf, musically, sounds better than it ever
has --- right now. If it increases in ratings again, even after
Sebastian is gone, that will be really impressive. For an original
naysayer, I have to give the whole team tons of credit. The real
question here: How will this affect WKDF?

As for the other stations: Mix looked good, as did Jack. I won't
give SIX any credit here to prevent Romer's ego from swelling
anymore (kidding CR!) I did expect more of a climb from The
Beat /Jamz as 92-Q slid. I am surprised the Venus did THAT
poorly. It sounds better musically than most. Must be that
listeners really don't like commercials running during the
music! The Zone, well covered below. Still, it's got it's great
moments!

103 should be feeling the heat. But will they do anything about it? Or just keep cutting the budget to accomodate? Stay tuned!

> I did expect more of a climb from The Beat /Jamz as 92-Q slid.

Who's in more trouble right now, KDF or 92Q? What's it going to take for either to compete strongly again?

According to demo stats, women are far more apt to listen to a single station than men, as they are not generally button-pushers (see TV remote). Almost nothing gets them off of that one station, unless they have a strong, strong reason to change the dial. There's nothing that strongly motivating over at 102.5. And given the fact that it is practically a fringe station in a lot of the area, women aren't tuning in because they are far less likely to put up with static and cut outs. And men, if they learn or sense that this is a station designed to draw women, they sure ain't gonna listen.

One man's "jerk" is another man's great programmer, and John Sebastian IS in fact a great programmer. In his year at Cumulus/Nashville, he pushed his staffers at 95.5 The Wolf to be the best they could be at all times. His direction, out the box thinking, passion for great radio and love of music of every genre was passed on to those who were fortunate enough to get to work with him and know him. John at work is distant, he's on a mission, and he's driven to win. Win he does. Some may not understand him at times, but isn't there an old quote that "to be great is to be misunderstood" or something of that nature? Outside of work, Sebastian is a true gentleman with a big heart and a delight to talk to. I've not known that many programmers who have his real passion and drive anymore. It's refreshing to see that in a man who has been at this as many years as he has. Not everyone here misses him, but I am one of the ones who do.

Congrats to a big turnaround from a very dead horse over the past many years....They still have two more goals to accomplish... WSIX is still the top 12+ Country and is less than a share point away, and overall 12+ leader and back on top (South Central's) WJXA is a about a share and a half point away...

I too was a naysayer. The station sounds great musically, I don't like the morning show and would like prefer more personality from the other jocks, but that is just my druthers. Congrats Wolf.

Jack - great post. There is nothing wrong with having pride, focus,
determination and even a bit of "attitude" if you talk the talk and
walk the walk. John did what he was expected to do. I think it took
a little longer to see the results than I expected, but now
the results and product are certainly solid. That being said, I
think very few people can say John threw any fluff or threats out
there at KDF or SIX. He planned his game and worked it in his
own unique way. And he took a lot of heat for it. How he reacted
to it in the office, I do not know. But, he certainly took a
sad situation and made a success out of it. I, again, admit to
being an original naysayer in the sense that I thought the Wolf
was somewhat understated on the rollout and wondered how it could
climb, etc. But, up to this point, a slow steady growth seems to
be the best way to have gone. Certainly John proved to be a bright
star, even for such a short time in this market. And, for what it
is worth, he was one of the few PD's willing to give new groups/artists
a shot. A friend of mine in Cowboy Crush said John was totally awesome
and open to putting their first song on the air after listening and
liking it. I wouldn't call that being a jerk! A rarity - yes.

What exactly don't you like about the morning show? It does well in the numbers... plays more music than the other country shows. Curious...

I don't even listen to country and find myself listening to it every now and then, it's kinda weird since I have a part 15 down here with the same name (diferent format)
______________

It's not that he's not funny; his competition is just too good. It doesn't get any better than Gerry House, although I'm sure that Denis' audience increases when that hack fills in for Gerry on the best-of shows.

Sorry, CR. I had to get one good jab in. ;-)
______________

There you go AGAIN Bob, taking your SERIOUS stabs at Romer.
I call foul and demand you censor yourself and close this thread!!!

Everybody knows that Gerry is only on the air so he can
listen to himself sound better when Romer is in charge.

Romer rules. I say send him to do mornings at the Wolf!!!

Hi, I'm jetfli, and I was a naysayer. [Everybody: Hi, jetfli...]

But not because I had anything against Sebastian. I barely even knew much about him before he got here, so I couldn't say I was a naysayer toward him or any talents he may or may not have possesed.

I was a naysayer because I remember when WSM-FM was AC, and thought they did a great job of it. Because I remember when they changed from AC to Country, and they had a fairly good thing going for a while. And because I witnessed when things started to slide, and slide, and slide. I saw many repeated attempts to revive it, some good money thrown at it, and none of it worked. I saw a House crowned King of Nashville Mornings, KDF go country, and 95.5 become practically irrelevant in their wake. I really thought the thing was over and done, beyond repair. I was a naysayer because of the station itself.

Just goes to show you that quite a bit is possible in the hands of the right talent. May every other station that's fallen on hard times be as fortunate.

Chris,

I say you play a Best of Romer. Get your old airchecks from 106 WLAC, 104.5 (Arrow, The Fox, Kicks...whatever the heck it was). And weren't you on 92Q long ago and back in the day? Show 98 WSIX who is boss. "Best of Romer", it could fly.

#1...

A one month extrapolated trend does not a successful station make.

Re: #1...

> A one month extrapolated trend does not a successful station

extrapolated - big word, impressive, as always 'cat. You
are right. It's what happens over multiple books and years
that really says it all. But, I think most of us have to
admit that we all bashed the fire out of it and even if it
is a short term performance, it should be noted. What we
also have to admit is that WKDF has just floundered themselves
into the cellar. That aided things. All of the problems at
WSIX are CR's fault, so he can expound on those!!!!!!!!!!!

I admit I actually scan in several times a day now and I
do NOT listen to Country music.
