WOLF/KSCS

I guess people never learn in this business. :'(

It's funny you can go back to the late 90's before Wolf and KSCS was Top Dog. Then BOOM! On comes The Wolf. KSCS under Dean James became what Wolf is doing now. No personality. Few Calls. Boring Talent. Lame promotions and 18 min of spots.
Under Brian Phillips The Wolf was Original, entertaining, Jocks have fun around the clock. KSCS becoming more stale. Scared to do ANYTHING entertaining. Wolf beat them a good solid three years. KSCS finally hired a Competent PD and KSCS beat the Wolf once. That PD died and since then both the Wolf and KSCS have been disasters. Cumulus screwing up the Wolf and some PD from MTV screwing up KSCS.

BUT....it appears to me KSCS is getting a second wind. The Wolf is just laying there wounded and bleeding. The sad thing is the bleeding hasn't stopped. All the jocks sound CANNED, Bored and half of them can't deliver more than a sentence or two.
KSCS promoting heavily. Wolf just laying there. What is going on at the Wolf? The same thing that happened to KSCS the past year or so. Clueless PD, and Bad DJ's.

I predict a 3.5 for KSCS and a 3.0 for the Wolf. If KSCS keeps this "Second Wind" and The Wolf continues to limp along with it's tail between it's legs I predict KSCS: 3.8 Wolf: 3.1

Amazing how Cumulus is letting the Wolf bleed to death. I'm going back to KLUV on the Internet.

I couldn't agree with you more. What sometimes happens is when a new company (Cumulus) buys a station ,they start cutting corners to increase the bottom line but most forget what the product is. If Exxon starting selling cheaper gas and it screwed up our engines, we would stop buying their gas. The same with a radio station. Once you get it to sounding good (pre Sabastian) then you water down the sound, your gonna loose listeners. John is a GREAT programmer, short term. He can get the ratings up a bit by doing the exact same thing at the WOLF that he has done at other stations, but where is the creativity. What he does is nothing new, it's a proven safe zone. Remember the good old days when people like Bill Drake or Buzz Bennet would come up with something no else was doing. That's how you win. That's why TV networks keep trying to come up with new ideas. Radio is getting stale. Someone needs to check the receipe. Cook it longer, ad spice, whatever, but give me the WOW factor. Make me listen and say WOW that reallys sounds great. It's not like he's coming up with anything new or unique for the WOLF and yes, KSCS will win unless someone at the WOLF wakes up and realizes you can't fix cancer with a band-aid and that's what JS is trying to do.

I think John IS the problem. I assume HE is the one stripping everything off the station. He may go up several TENTHS of a point but what he's doing is not a fix if all you can do is bring it up to a 3.0
He's in for a rude awakening if sounding like an AOR in delivery is going to get him ratings. Country listeners are not that sophisticated. Most want some bland easy listening format where the jocks sound like there not into it.

I doubt the Wolf's numbers will improve. While I'm allll about variety...you just aren't gonna keep people tuned in when you are playin John Cougar on a damn country station. I seem to hear a lot more sappy Gold than I used to as well.

Neither station is ready for a big roll in ratings IMO. WOLF hasnt had a player since Phillips good enough to carry out what he started. KSCS neither has had the talent. Both stations are ina musical doldrum. Sebastian can make a difference on theshort term, but it will take more of an overhaul than adding Mellancamp for color.

I don't see how adding music that doesn't fit, neutering the talent, and adding sappy gold will improve ratings.

Hey i'm not saying that he can fix it all either, its a long way to go. But in all honesty, titles that "fit" is argueable. Also, cleaning up what he might consider clutter and noise before he gives the talent more rope is pretty basic in cleaning up a station. Say what you will, he did a nice job in a few places, and while most talent think that these radio stations are theirs and creatively all that comes from them is off limits to criticism, it coulndt be further from the truth to me. In nashville these same critisism arose over how badly the staff was shut down, and he had a nice impact against SIX during his short term there. I agree that sappy gold does not fit anywhere while music is so good unless your a gold based station. That is both WOLF and KSCS hurdle, they have to stop being so safe. sorry about the spelling...rushed.

Very true, noboby likes to be told to shut up, but sometimes you need to drastically go the other way to get back to center. You have to admit that the WOLF has been a little all over the place for some time...and musically lost its way

I agree...I'm not one that beats the "LET TALENT RAMBLE FOR 3 MINS A BREAK" drum...I think the music will do more harm than what good steering the talent will do. It would be different if there weren't already 5 stations playing Cougar, ZZ Top, Eagles, and whatnot.

KZPS, the Bone and Jack...Who else? Sure KVIL might play the prissy eagle songs, and mix will play sappy Cougar love songs, but 5 stations playing all 3?

KLUV, KVIL (probably), Jack, KZPS, KEOM and now KPLX play the Eagles. No ZZ or JCM on KEOM yet, however.

"Double Golden". What an unexpected pleasure to see radiochick mention Bill Drake and Buzz Bennett in this thread. I'll add Jack McCoy to the list: "The Last Contest...". And never forget----NINE!!!

I'm just not sure we've got 5 stations in this town that play all 3...Especially when you throw ZZ Top into the mix-

And to me there's a big difference between ZPS,Bone and Jack who might play all 3 of those artists in teh same set....And the Wolf, KVIL, KLUV, etc who MIGHT drop one of those songs in occasionally, but certainly not back to back to back...

Plus there's one huge-ass difference between the crap that KVIl might play (HC, desperado, peaceful easy feeling, best, etc) and their 'rock' songs like fast lane, etc...It's easy to say 'a ton of stations play the Eagles", but doesn't it really matter WHAT songs they're playing?

ZZ and JCM will likely be on the playlist once we start phasing in the 80s.

As far as The Eagles go, they had five Classic Rockers in the 70’s alone (Hotel California, Heartache Tonight, Life in the Fast Lane, Already Gone and The Long Run), of which four are / have been on our playlist. We can’t really spin Life in the Fast Lane because it is risqué content for a school station.

Lyin' Eyes, Take it to the Limit, Peacful easy feeling, I can't tell you why, i suspect have more appeal than Already Gone, Heartache tonight IMO

The reason Sebastian is adding these non-country artists is because they're country-rock artists.

Correct, and even some fringe songs are compatable, but not needed in any full rotation. It dosnt matter how many stations play the full library of these artists, the country core can accept a few in the mix.

Sebastian needs to add a few Byrds songs when Gram Parsons was with the group.

Nah, Flying Burrito Brothers, Cw McCall,Leon Russell,Jerry Jeff,Poco,CCR,Delaney and Bonnie,Augie Meyer, Shawn Phillips..just to name a few.
