Wolf Morning Show Goes Bye Bye

Word from an insider is that the original morning show is being replaced, with Executive Producer Marcus Osborne the first to go ... talk is that he never delivered what The Wolf was looking for (Heard he's doing movie reviews at ALICE) I actually thought the morning show was refreshing for a country station, with Gill Alexander & LeBaron being very intelligent and Eddie King keeping things funny and light (BTW - PD Mahalick has BALLS casting a gay guy on a COUNTRY morning show ... and it works, King is a listener favorite and really great) They had good chemistry too ... not all that cheesy, hick BS you usually get from country radio morning shows. All the other jocks feel like they need to shout all the time.

The biggest complaint I hear though is the music ... SAME 5 SONGS ALL DAY LONG!!!! Probably driven by consultants, because it is so incredibly uninspired ... Nikki Landry is the music director, but she is from the east coast and obviously not tapped into what works in this market yet. At least the morning show has a "Flashback Friday" and spin some great classics with the new stuff - that's refreshing. I hope The Wolf figures it out, it would be great to have at least one great country station in the portfolio of stations that the Bay Area has to offer.

... also just heard that the station will relaunch an entirely new morning show, but are working to keep Eddie King on as the only original cast member

Has anyone worked with Eddie King, currently on the Y'all-Turnative Morning Show at 95.7 The Wolf? or know anything about him?
I can't find anything on the guy, other than what's on their website ... is he in San Francisco from another market perhaps? Thanks!

Eddie is awesome, and this is his first radio gig. He's really funny and is as nice as they come.

radiotrump - why have you posted this 3 times on different threads? I'm not attacking or anything, just wondering if you're enjoying spreading this news a bit too much.

Hey Velvet -

Not enjoying at all, just shocked I guess about the change. Thought things were going fine with mornings but guess PD Mahalick has a different plan.
My mole says things are moving fast over at Duh Woof!

"(BTW - PD Mahalick has BALLS casting a gay guy on a COUNTRY morning show ... and it works, King is a listener favorite and really great)."

I'll try to ignore the Freudian reference there, and just say - this IS the SF Bay Area, and if they hope to attract broad listenership, they have to appeal to listeners outside the traditional conservative country audience. If the guy is talented, it doesn't matter that he's gay, and it might actually help.

I've been enjoying their Classic Country HD2 channel, and I've never been a big country music fan. They seem to have a big playlist, and I've heard everything from old Gene Autry standards to recent crossover hits from Trisha Yearwood. The bulk of the music is 60s and 70s.

Strange. I've never listened but I saw a story on Eye on the Bay a few months ago, saying how they've trended up and attract even the non-country listeners...

That would be really disappointing. As a person in my 30's who to this point HATED country music(or so I thought), I have really, really enjoyed the morning show. I actually have now downloaded a cd full of country music(legally, in case you are wondering). My Mom is a huge fan, which is why I started listening. Maybe I'm not who they are looking for, but the morning show was my favorite part.

You're exactly the demo they're looking for. Start calling and telling Scott how much you love the y'allturnative morning show.

I thought the Wolf's Morning show was refreshing and original, and it's too bad Marcus was let go. Mahlick wasn't the one who brought in Eddie, that idea came from marcus and Gill from what i know. I also happen to know that Gil Alexander and marcus were the creative forces behind that show NOT Mahalik. So love it or hate, they were the responcible parties. I actually miss hearing Marcus on the morning show! He was so mean and most likely to piss somebody off. I thik every show needs that. The folks at the Wolf have really gone out of their way to wreck the only fresh and original morning show on the radio. Gay guy, Jewish Guy, Black guy?? On Country radio?? Awesome! That took balls. The Wolf clearly wants to dumb down the product.

LeBaron was not "unloaded" from the show, she is taking time to travel with her grandmother. Marcus was laid off.

Just spoke to a friend "in the know" at Duh-Woof and word is the PD is looking to Dumb Down the morning show. He says the original lineup was too "smart" for it's own good ... too much conversation & current topics / not enough snorting & fart jokes that a country audience is supposed to love (is that true even in the bay?)

They test drove their mid-day chick (Nikki) a couple of times but apparently the feedback was laughable and she doesn't have what it takes to host a Market #4 Show yet ... I actually heard one of her mornings and she's definitely not the brightest bulb (but isn't that what they want?) ... once again, who knows!

Sounds like they are really confused over at Duh-Woof. Will be interesting to hear the new "Dumber" morning show though, but can only hope they don't have a bunch of country folks shouting the whole show like their afternoon guy does.

Good Luck Woof!

Was just discussing them with a certain PD and a certain former employee.

The problem with country in SF is that SF and its nearby 'burbs are not country-music territory. The more outlying areas, that *are* country-music territory, are covered by successful country stations already (KRTY, KNCI).

Well, good luck to them with the "pull my finger in the morning" show...

Do people actually like that hack-y morning zoo type of show at this point? Good luck, indeed. Perhaps they should be looking for new consultants.

I would not say KRTY is very successful, only because they are the only "game" in town, in san jose. Here's the real problem IMHO.... country was HOT when Young Country and KSAN were in SF, those days are long gone... when THE BEAR was around, they had a solid line-up --JD, Katie Mason (z95.7) kinda odd having a top 40 chick doing country, and others. THE WOLF does not seem to have a deejay that can connect with the audience. And if they are not doing tons of promotions than the audience won't be there, that is something that Young Country did very well, they were always hitting the streets.

Still - KRTY does better in San Jose than The Wolf does in San Francisco. This is just my opinion, but I think the choice of tunes is better on KRTY than KBWF. They also seem to do a lot more tie-ins with local nightclubs, etc. (your comment on promotion fits here) although I've heard some attempts to bring people out on KBWF too. However, most of my friends who enjoy Country listen to KRTY or KPIG. Their complaint about The Wolf is that the songs are boring - OK - that's not viable research by any means. But the finest DJ's in the market won't get results on a music station if people don't enjoy the music. There are those who say you can't take a nationally-researched format and just plop it into the San Francisco market and have the same results you do everywhere else, and I truly believe that. A quick check of the country scene in San Francisco shows that people are willing to come out and see this music, but the local radio station doesn't do anything to promote those shows or play anything but the national hits. Remember Sully Roddy and "All Kinds of Country" on KSAN? KBWF needs somebody like that.

Did'nt give the show enough time. Why they feel they have to dumb it down for country listeners is idiotic. To win in country rule #1 is simple. Just be "Family Friendly!" Do not stray! Involve mom, dad, the kids. Stay fresh but clean. The country listener is more passionate about their music & thier country stars than any other format. Know & love your music, & above all know your artists...George, Tim, Kenny, Sugarland, Carrie, Taylor Swift, Kieth Urban, Rascal Flatts.....God, this is the best music on the radio! Just be your format. Can you believe there is only one station in San Francisco playing the forementioned artists. I would market the hell out of that fact. Just a thought.

couldn't agree with this stuff more. I had heard too that the morning show was Marcus & Gill's creation, not Scott's, but either way, it's a relief to see that others here feel as I do....The Wolf wants to dumb down their station, so they got rid of the ever sharp, Gill Alexander, who seemed to know everything from politics to sports to pop culture. It seems odd that in the Bay Area, those in mgmt would think their audience is dim. As a 40 y/o woman, I miss listening to a nice, family friendly, comfortable morning show that also stimulated my brain. I guess that's not what the Wolf wants. Or maybe the others felt threatened by the intelligence?? Too bad. They had a good thing going.
