I happened to hear Wolfman Jack a couple of times on the way to work at night. I'm not sure the show works at least not for me. It's nice to hear him and all that but I didn't hear much in the way of any content. Plus I know he's no longer with us and I think of that every time I hear the show.

The first station I worked for WAXY 106 FM in Fort Lauderdale - Miami carried the Wolfman Jack Oldies show. I ran the board during the show and was instructed how to handle any calls that came in about Wolfman Jack. Management even thought people might try to come down to the station to see him. I don't remember anyone ever calling or coming down. That led me to wonder if the popularity of Wolffman Jack was overestimated. No disrespect intended.
 
I think part of the problem is that most listeners know that Wolfman Jack is DEAD. The new guy is not as good as the original Bob Smith. Plus, this new creation just yells in to the mike and never really says anything smart, original, or funny. Besides, listeners to XM want music, not a bunch of talk.....Just my take on the matter.

There's a Wolfman Jack show on non-satellite radio, too, possibly the same show (this was brought up in another thread, and it's definitely him).
 
Thanks for the info MHB.. Guess I remember the guy when he sounded better. We never really got into him up here in Cincinnati, and most of us never heard him from his Down Mexico Days. I still think that part of the issue is that most XM listeners like the sounds without all the chatter. Just my opinion.

I don't mind the chatter if it's something meaningful. The jocks on 6 have a good balance and I enjoy their humor/information. They add life to the format.
 
I agree Mike. It seems to work on the sixties channel and fifties and seventies. I'm still glad we have some choices, such as 40 46 49 to my liking where talk is minimal and music is almost constant.

An hour at 11PM I can deal with...it's 5 hours on Sunday evening that forces me back to surfing the AM/FM dial.
 
Your only one person out of many that listen to the show. Sorry its to much for you on Sunday. What XM needs to do is air more of the original wolfman show from XERB. I would like that very much!

Bob Smith (Wolfman Jack ) was on XERB (later XEPRS), Rosarito Beach, Baja California, Mexico from 1966 until 1972. The studios were in Los Angeles, about 150 miles north. To make it work, Wolf would go into the studio every night and do a show as though it were live, recording it onto huge reels of tape. Those tapes would then get sent via UPS to Mexico, where they'd be played back the following night from the transmitter site.

Bob was leasing the airtime from XERB's owners, and then selling the commercial time to turn a profit. As a result, he owned the programs themselves and arranged for every reel of tape to be shipped back to him in Los Angeles after it aired. A cheapskate would have bulk erased them and recorded the next show on them, but Bob kept most if not all of them...possibly with an eye to some sort of future use (Wolfman had several record deals over the years, and left XEPRS in 1972 with syndication in mind). There are likely upwards of 1,000 four or five-hour XERB/XEPRS shows in existence (not counting the "Graffiti Gold" and other syndicated shows he did in the 70s, 80s and 90s). A little time and effort with digital editing to remove call letter, time, topical and location references and you've got a mountain of material to re-purpose on XM.

The Wolfman was certainly ahead of his time! Look at all the voice tracking he did in his lifetime on the radio! BTW they shouldn't edit any of the XERB station jingles from these shows its what makes them so cool to listen to. At least throw in a few of them for old times sake!
 
I used to run the syndicated Wolfman Jack Show back in the early '70's we carried it on WAXY-FM in Fort Lauderdale. It was a much better show than what I've heard on XM.

I agree. Many of use listen to the Decades channel for the "chatter". If we love the music, we have it on records, tapes, CDs or mp3s.
