Women in radio!!

Do you believe "Radio" is a mans world?? Is there no opportunity for them to move up on this business? But I have always heard it was easier for them to advance, since there are fewer of them. Just a thought.

I was very surprised to see this on this board...WOW! It's interesting to talk to a female co-worker they don't feel that way at all. It's hard for them to break through, I'm not a sexist idiot. The best person for the job is my thought. I just have issue with engineers. I think they have life too easy. They do whatever they want...like going to the transmitter site...and they go home and go to bed. Or wow, I pulled a late night at the wink, wink...transmitter site. Who knows if they do anything or not...

I just have issue with engineers.

Let's stick to the issue at hand and save the engineers for that other board you posted. We're talking about women in the industry. Radio Info Man, to answer your question, I don't think there are fewer of them in this business. If you mean fewer female jocks, definitely. What I have found is that a lot of women either decide to go into sales or other administrative functions, or get out of the business altogether. I think the reason for the latter is because this is a low-paying profession, even for men. Unfortunately, we still live in a society where women are paid lower than men for the same work. They tend to think about the future more than we do, and trying to save a buck for the future is tough when you're in the on-air side of this business. In other words, they don't want to be living like college students when they're 40. Most guys I know embrace that lifestyle. Women outgrow it.

Good lord ildj2009, what in the world do you have against engineers? Were you raised by wild engineers out in the woods and then cast out of the commune when you refused to wear a pocket protector? Did a roving pack of engineers attack your family and eat your dog? LET IT GO or get into another line of work!

To go back to the original post & question..there are plenty of talented women out there working in this business. Unfortunately too many companies & PDs see a woman's only role on the air as some sort of giggling slut there to prop up the morning zoo. In the 21st century the business ought to be beyond that. We should be looking to promote people who are GOOD & TALENTED on the air whether they are men or women, black or white or plaid, but the business in general still wants to deal in stereotypes, and it's hurts the profession.

I know lots of great ladies in this business. And there is a lack of ladies in this business. They do not get an advantage in anyway...I still beleive there is a boys club and a glass ceiling...they have to break through. But, I know some great programmers, and consultants.
