WOMX-FM Mix 105.1 Flipping Soon?

I've read on Radio Insight that WOMX-FM Mix 105.1 might be flipping to "105.1 Amp Radio" (Top-40/CHR) like what L.A. has now, bringing Clear Channel's XL106.7 a direct competitor...

Discuss. ;D

Shameless plug:
"DJ Mo Radio" Fridays 5-7pm on WPRK-FM 91.5 (www.wprkdj.org)
(If "Mix" flips, send CBS's lost listeners my way.) 8)

It's tough to say, if CBS were indeed to flip to CHR in Orlando... would it be Mix? It seems like they are looking to flip PPM markets first, true... 'OMX is their most under-performing station ratings wise, but how does it do billing-wise? But would you want to flip from Hot AC or would you choose a different format?

Time will tell!

FWIW WOMX has been leaning in this direction for some time now. They have been playing songs that were hits on CHR stations years ago, and yet they had never played them when they were currents. Even some of the currents played now are a little too CHRish for a Hot A/C IMHO.
One also has to look at their target demos. How well are they doing with the soccer moms?
One other thing. Wasn't the three CBS Orlando stations up for sale at one time?

If this flip comes to fruition, it will make for a most interesting battle - especially since CBS usually does a great job with their CHRs. But I've got a number of questions lingering.

Technically speaking, there's probably a little room in Orlando for a Top 40 that leans slightly rhythmic. Not much, though. Despite their positioning, Power 95.3 has no problem playing stuff like Lady Gaga and Britney. XL is heritage, and a damn well-programmed station to boot (miles better than they were four or five years ago). Although Mix's ratings have been slipping somewhat, I'm not convinced that it's already time to pull the plug, especially since they probably bill pretty well as a Hot AC. Making a dent against such formidable competition in the ratings will be difficult enough, especially with so much playlist overlap, so would AMP Radio really prove a better money-maker than Mix?

I don't know. I'm not in the market and know nothing of those numbers, so take this speculation for what it is. I'm just putting it out there.

I was listening to mix tonight for their saturday night party mix, which bills itself as the best dance music from the 70s, 80s and early 90s. So far this evenings play list is as follows in just the last two hours - note the music is current , not from the 70s 80s and 90s

Britney Spears - Womanizer (played twice)
Kevin Rudolph - Let is Rock (played twice)
Lady Gaga - Just Dance
along with several other current songs. I haven't listened to the Saturday Night Party mix in the last couple of weeks, but the music they are playing tonight is consistant with a CHR/Pop station in the works. By the way, they haven't played the previous three songs before.

Make that Kevin Rudolf and Britney 3 X in last three hours. It's almost like the station is on autopilot repeating itself. The usually interaction with listerners during the party mix is absent and for the most part so is Kara Killen - host, except to announce Kevin Rudolf coming to Orlando - the Florida Mall of all places - before the song plays. Maybe it's nothing but just thought i'd throw in my observations from this evening

While it is true a CHR WOMX will target WPYO(Cox) and WXXL(Clear Channel), do not forget CBS Owns WJHM...so if this is true and WOMX is going to flip-I would not look for it to be a Rhythmic CHR because they are going to have to PROTECT 102 JAMZ so it is very likely a CHR on 105.1 would be a POP/CHR and perhaps given the impact COX has had with WCFB (Star 94.5) some adjustments could be made at 102 JAMZ as well....a JAMZ/AMP Combo could (If done right) give CBS a Good LOCK on the younger Demo and leave COX & Clear Channel having to make changes.

Half the company was for sale, but now that the credit markets have dried up no one can buy or sell anything big.

That's actually a positive thing. If we all wait for these stations to return to real market value, we'll be able to
buy the damn thing and make it actually sound good again.

Poor WOMX… They are in a no win situation. WPOZ, which is invisible - unless you have the non-commercial switch on when you look at the ratings - has just killed them dead. Even if they saw what was happening, how could they counter program a religious station?

The “Safe for the Little Ears” campaign earned them first choice among soccer moms - #1 25-44 women for several years. But now with the success of Ellis Feaster in the morning drive (which has hit #1, 12+, at least for several hours if not the whole time period, 6AM -10AM, M-F, two books in a row.)

This last book, WPOZ hit #1 12+ in women in the metro. Therefore, if WOMX ages down against XL, or ages up against WMGF, they still have to contend with the growing dominance of WPOZ taking their toll against the three.

Forgive me if I'm somewhat skeptical. You're telling me that a non-commercial Christian FM is the #1 station in the demo? Really????

They may be #1 when compared to other non-commercial stations, but I wasn't aware that arbitron even measured this category. Without violating any copyrights, can anyone verify this?

Only the releases to the press exclude non-coms. The computerized Maximiser data stations get show them, and have for many, many years.

In fall, 12+, WPOZ has a 5.6 share, good for 5th in the market.

Thanks for the info. Good to get it from someone credible.

Given that this is apparently true, Orlando is an even weirder market than I thought it was.

Bring it Baby!!! Let the CHR wars begin again. This may almost be as exciting as BJ 105 versus Y1067 back in the day. My money is on 105.1, just like the old days.......

Next thing you know 95 LOF will be back on the air....................gotta love it!!!!

While we're at it.....let's get Zeta 7 back on the air to battle WJRR.

Thank you, David, for the backing me up. WPOZ scored a 6.4 in the book before this one (Summer ’08). Good for third place 12+ and number one 25-54 women. They had a good growth in cume in the Fall book which may explain the drop in share into the fives as the TSL dipped. Either way, they are generally invisible unless you are looking for them and a force to be reckoned with—

Tx

(BTW, David, I’m a huge fan of yours and a great admirer as I have traveled some of the turf that you have over the years in Latin America. The story of starting and owning the station in Quito in the 60’s is amazing!)

Fat chance if any for that happening again, since both stations are CC stations. Only thing I could think of is WJRR staying as is, and 107.7 being retooled as "Zeta 7" as classic rock. Bet that would be the talk of town.

I would love to see a Orlando Arbitron from the mid 70's. My guess is Zeta 7 was only cuming about 20,000 or so a week given the size of the market in those days and the demo. However, it appears to have been a very LOYAL cume to have kept the memory alive --at least on this forum!

Regardless, Zeta's reach at it's zenith was just a tiny fraction of the cume that WMGF reaches today.
