I was in the Keys in Marathon This past Wednesday night and at 9:30 pm WONQ was blsating in as if it was a local. Orlando GM thought you might be interested. Somebdy must have forgot to power down.
 
I'm quite surprised since I could not pick them up last week when I was in Clermont.That's sorta the opposite direction somewhat but not by much.Especially,if the signal goes all the way down to the keys.
 
WONQ is non-directional day at 45 kilowatts. The nighttime power is 1.7 kilowatts with a three tower directional. Main radiation (main lobe) is at 200 degrees. The three tower directional gives a gain of approximately 3.9 which will give an effective radiated power at 200 degrees of 6.63 kilowatts. The signal you picked up at Key West is most likely skywave signal, you can probably pick it up in Cuba too. The skywave varies with the seasons so if you can't pick it up next time you go to Key West don't be surprised. The other thing is that there are only a few stations on 1030 Khz. because they are limited from operating nighttime by WBZ, Boston on 1030 Khz. The frequency is fairly clean. If WONQ is off the air you will pick up WBZ, Boston quite clear.

Not true if you look to the south!

There are all kinds of stations on 1030 in the Caribbean, Central and South America, many within the same distance range of Boston to the Keys. So WBZ in Key West is by no means a dependable catch.
 
David, I was talking about picking up WBZ in Orlando, not the Keys. You can pick it up, in Orlando, very clearly when WONQ is off the air. I was also talking about frequency use of 1030 Khz. in the U.S.. I am sure you can pick up a lot of Caribbean and South American stations at the Keys.
