Woody and Wilcox

Yikes...this story broke on KTUU yesterday. Both W&W have been suspended indefinitely and their pay is being donated to charity according to www.1005thefox.com - I'd say this is way worse than Imus (which I think was overblown). When will guys like this learn? What a dumb ass move - just shameful.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Derogatory remarks made last week by two local shock-jock DJs on KBFX 100.5 FM have sparked community outrage.

The station has since apologized but some question whether that will be enough to assuage the tension.

This really offends me and I'm a white guy new to Alaska. I just don't get why jocks (and listeners) think this crap is funny. But things like this will continue as long as the consequenses are insignificant (and temporary suspension is insignificant imo).

I never found Howard Stern to be all that funny, but at least he was innovative. Stern wannabes are even less entertaining to me. But that's just my opinion, and I couldn't care less if others choose to listen and even laugh at jokes I quit telling when I was 12. I don't even want W & W fired specifically for what they said - free speech and all that. However, I'm a rabid capitalist, and I hope the station's sponsors not only agree that this was highly offensive and beyond what's considered even borderline acceptable for free radio, but follow through with threats to pull their ad dollars.

Stern made over a half BILLION dollars from his offensive humor. Imus signed a giant contract after his suspension. I don't think careers should end over this kind of humor, but there should at least be SOME career-affecting consequenses when jocks use free airwaves to joke about violence against anyone, particularly in a region where violence against women is all too common.

The question would be - who hired and vetted these clowns? Does the company have a firm and established policy regarding performance? I venture that the policy/philosophy was deep in some "employee handbook", seldom if at all reinforced and that ultimately the PD should also be doing penance - it was on his watch.

My philosophy was to never do anything that would embarrass the owner or his/her family - kind of a Golden Goose sort of thing.

If the station is owned by bean counters you have to consider the philosophy. The station is ultimately at fault.

I agree to a point. Yes, morally and even legally the station is ultimately responsible for what happened. But the station and particularly the PD have about as much actual control over what comes out of the talent's mouth as a mother of a young child does while standing in line at the grocery store. In both cases, the talent/children will say whatever they want to say, no matter how wrong or stupid, and no one can shove the words back in their mouths and pretend it wasn't said. The station's reaction is what will tell me how seriously they take this unfortunate event. So far it doesn't tell me much. They need to do something a bit more meaningful than just donate their salary to charity while they attend diversity training. That only begs the question, "Why weren't these two in diversity training long ago?"

I tell my counterparts all the time there are certain things you just cant say on the air and expect to get away with it. What a foolish thing to say. I think its safe to say these guys will never work on air again. Especially if the advertising boycott and potiental FCC fines or violations take the station under. Even local politians are getting involved calling it "Hate Talk". Please, all on air personailities reading this learn a lesson from others mistakes and watch what you say. That is in fact if you wanna continue to work in radio.

I hope you're right that they won't work on the air again. Though if they do get officially let go by KBFX, I'm sure other operators in the area would be interested - especially with all the press these guys are getting - no such thing as bad press, right? That phrase might be somewhat of a stretch given the circumstances :p. They did have a good book in the Fall, could it be WW&W - Woody, Wilcox, and the Wolf? A brand new station like 96.3 would love to get that kind of exposure, good or bad!

Why on earth would you WANT this kind of exposure. I hope the FCC blisters CC for this and these dopes learn some class.

I have to totally agree with this statement. Yes the two idiots made the ill advised statement on the air, but....

They were hired as "Shock Jocks". Their mission in life is to be offensive, because copy cat radio thinks that if Stern and Imus and make millions in revenue for their owners, then there must be a lucrative local market for the same kind of programming.

The jocks share the blame, but the majority of it goes to the station, the PD the GM and also the owner, who all hired the idiots and gave them the mission of what ot do on the air. If they were not encouraged to shock listeners on the air, they would not do so. And time has proven that to continue shocking your audience, you have to get more and more offensive as time passes. Over time, the audience develops an insensitive attitude to the "humor" and it take more to get the same emotional value.

Ultimately the blame and shame is on the ownership and management because they premitted and likely encouraged it too.

Just my $0.02 worth, YMMV

Now, jtudor, I couldn't DISAGREE with you more. Yes W&W were hired to be shock jocks. And I'm sure they were encouraged by the station's higher-ups, in some fashion or another, to push the limits of what their schtick entailed. But one can shock without denegrating women and Alaskan Natives, and one can joke without laughing at sexual assault and domestic violence. Hiring a successful shock jock doesn't imply condoning ALL offensive speech, anymore than hiring a successful stock broker doesn't imply condoning insider trading and hiring a successful bank teller doesn't imply condoning embezzlement or bank fraud. I suppose in our lawsuit-obscessed society we all want to blame as many people as possible for the acts of one or two people, but I cannot fault the PD, the whole radio station, network, or industry because two moronic local jocks felt the need to prove just how stupid they really are on the public airways.

For the record, I will totally blame the station if they don't take any meaningful action against these two, and I will let my feelings be known to any sponsor that chooses to attach their name to a future version of the W&W show on any local station.

This kind of radio has got to go... C'mon, guys, we're better than this.

Radio is bland and boring with these guys gone it'll be a little more
boring. People are so easily offended and whine like babies today
it really sickens me. But you can hear all sorts of offensive
stuff on spanish radio today, theres sexism, racism.
Some shows they actually curse!! But nothing will happen to them.
You have to be white to be thrown off the air.
