Woody Durham Retiring From UNC Play-By-Play

I see you're not going to miss him very much... :D

I had to listen to him for ages running the board for UNC games...Of course, it could get worse say, Carolina Kia...Mike Hogewood! God, please no!!!

If Woody Durham wanted to break Larry Munson's record at Georgia, he could have! Woody Durham gets to leave on his own terms and that's a good thing.

Now the question is who will replace him? Those are big shoes to fill! ???

I never thought this day would come.
Listening to my Heels will never be the same again.
Some of you may know that I am Blind. So I usually get my sports from radio it is easier to follow than tv. Listening to Woody I was always able to follow and understand what was happening in the games. He will be missed.
Don't think it will really set in for me until September when I tune in for the first football game.

The question was asked during lunch at work, who could replace Woody Durham on UNC Games??? Some crazy guy proclaimed: BRIAN FORMICA!!!!! (WFMY-TV 2 Sports "Director"???!!??). I then nearly CHOKED on my egg salad sandwich!!! Brian Formica??? Seems like a nice guy, but acts like a 18 year old College kid in a frat house!!! BRIAN FORMICA???? How could that guy even suggest that he could replace Woody Durham???

It may be noted (for the record) that Woody Durham was Sports Director at WFMY-TV 2 CBS from 1963-1975 before going to Raleigh...

What kind of dysfunctional place could you work at if the News2 sports director is the topic of lunchtime discussion?
Much less if the reason for bringing him up is "Who will replace Woody Durham?"
Not to mention the fact that someone knows him by name?
Wow.

Gawd, I'm with you on this one! Who really cares.. Sorry, I'm a Gator man.. but back to the subject..Formica sucks just like all of the 2 people.. Gannett needs to clean house..but then again, maybe they work cheap..8 and 12 aren't any better..just to be fair!

Whoever replaces Woody will be gone in a year or two - NO MATTER WHO THEY GET. They will never survive the comparisons. After that, the next guy will settle in and probably last a few years longer. I doubt anyone will ever have the job as long as Woody. It's not done like that these days.

;D Well, I am available but the only problem is I don't know Jack about Sports and I hate Carolina! Otherwise good to go! BIGAPE

+1 for dubba.
just like the basketball coaches.
Guthridge stayed for three years
which locked in his retirement pay.
(NC averages the last 3 years)
Doherty recruited well so that
Williams won with his recruits.
bottom line: 5 years from now
UNC will have their 3rd voice.

Being someone who is a long term UNC fan who has not missed a home football in game in close to three decades (what can I say I'm a glutton for punishment) and who has attended in the area of 150-200 basketball games in his life I must testify, Woody was in his prime a pretty damn good basketball PBP man, but even at his best a middling football PBP man. Now I havent watch a coaches show in ages, so I have no idea how it is done now but I always found it telling as a kid growing up in the 70's & 80's that Dean's show had Woody's calls used during the highlights, at least for about every other game (otherwise you would get Dean's commentary) , Crum or Mack Browns did not.

In regards to the longevity of who is next up at courtside of the Dean Dome or high atop the butchered over expanded Kenan Stadium, it truly depends. If Mick Mixon comes back from the Panthers or Wes Durham comes up from Ga Tech/Falcons then I see it as a long term replacement in that we do not have this discussion again for at least a decade.

Jones Angell it seems has been getting groomed for this position and he is what I would consider a mid range replacement, in that his shelf life would be about 5 years. Now if Learfield or Leerfield or however it is spelled goes outside the 'carolina family' then I think the prognosis of having to look for another PBP man in a couple of seasons becomes a distinct possibility.

Whoever gets the gig it will be someone who will have the Tarheel mindset because to say that Steve Kirschner and company is a bit over sensitive to critical viewpoints of the various programs would be a bit of an understatement, go ask Art Chansky.

It's Wes Durham's job if he wants it. I don't know why he'd want to leave Atlanta for Chapel Hill, other than to continue the Durham legacy in calling Carolina games. Perhaps he's also getting tired of the demands of calling major college football/basketball, NFL, and also hosting a sports talk radio show. That could be another reason he takes the gig. But it's going to be offered to him.

If he turns it down, I agree with the previous poster and say Jones Angell will get the gig. I also wouldn't be so quick to downplay his ability to hold the job. Jones is a Carolina grad, just like Woody. I could see him holding on to the job for the next 20-30+ years. Anyone who has heard him call ACC Tournament games knows that he has the chops for this.

I don't really remember Woody Durham, but I remember the name. A bunch of clouds moving across the screen and the Gulf logo. I can't remember whether it was the solid orange Gulf logo or the newer orange and white.

Actually •Worked briefly in Florence, SC, at WBTW-TV and then went to Greensboro, NC, where he served for 14 years (1963-1977) as the Sports Director for WFMY-TV.
