Apply generous amount of suntan lotion to your receiving equipment.

A suggestion for what to do tomorrow night:

Take your plastic patio chair, a table, a long multi-outlet extension cord and all your DX'ing apparatus outside to a location that assures a clear northern view. Prior to nightfall, set up all DX'ing equipment on that table beside you, and activate all electrical items. Plug your headphones into your receiver & put the headphones on your head. Now sit in your backyard, allow your brain to slip into trance mode, & gaze towards the north and prepare yourself for the Northern Lights show, all the while receiver-surfing the long, medium and short wave bands.

If you have a license to smoke medical marijuana, you might want to use a bit to improve the experience, though you will want to make certain to write all your new DX catches down immediately after you log them, and bring a few Twinkies and Ding Dongs along when you come out, or you can just pre-order a pizza for backyard delivery.

Oh. Don't forget to put on your aluminum foil hat.

Just what do you suppose a solar flare is likely to do to my loins?
Should I be shopping for a lead-lined jockstrap? ;D
 
And may the massive, TV13, 222 mHz Es event begin...would like top of the dial to SD/NE with 97.3 out of Sioux Falls wiping out KIRO please. Also, please give me massive Southern CA skip on AM bringing in KABC, KLAA, KFWB and others like locals...

What will this do to the AM dial?
 
Well, solar activity affects AM, and it can cause radio blackouts (like in aurora cx, everything to the N is wiped out).

Last couple of days around sunset were a little strange. Lots of close-in stuff that isn't there during the day, and some northern stations missing (but not all of them)

Do solar flares affect E skip?

I didn't think they did.

Don't they cause F2 skip, though?
 
Will this affect my latitude in FL, or is it just aurora for the northern folk?

E-skip has indeed gone on the last 2-3 days, and in January no less.

Must not be as big of a CME as I thought was predicted?

I'm still hearing the 50kW that's 7.3 miles NW of me on 760, KFMB, just as strong as ever, as well as the 10kW 6.3 miles N on 1130, KSDO.

Also 1000 KOMO Seattle is in, mixing with KCEO Vista. (I can't check any other NW frequencies as they are covered by closer co-channel stations or very strong local adjacents.) KSTP is also there (but weak as usual), competing with other stations on the frequency. KOA is quite strong, and KTWO is trying to break through semi-local XESDD on 1030.

Am I just too far south at 32°45'40"N for it to affect me, or is it not as strong of a CME as I was expecting?

Am I reading the map right? It shows a highway running between 2 of KFMB's towers.
 
Yes, radioman, you are reading it right. So when the CME hits, should I expect KFMB's reception to be wiped out at Mast Blvd & Mt Soledad Fwy (CA-52), or at W Hills Pkwy & Carlton Oaks Dr, 92071? ;)
 
Currently, AB blasters are very weak, and anything NE of Alberta is gone. Hearing lots of E/S activity, but no sign of KABC like a local clearly on 790 yet...

I was traveling in Pennsylvania (York to be exact) on Saturday and Sunday, and at around 11PM Saturday night WMAL-AM 630 was coming in strong out of D.C. Usually its not heard in the clutter at night.

Around 6AM on Sunday, KXIC-AM 800 out of Iowa City, Iowa was clear enough to listen for about 20 minutes. I think that was one of my further catches in the last year or so.

Not sure if this was due to the CME or just luck, but it was still neat to hear west of the Mississippi!
 
I also wrote this on the Cubans in Kansas thread.

In Bellevue, WA the CME is hitting us hard. 530-1000 is completely DEAD, no skywave, only GW. From 1000-1200 some weak skywave of KEX, KNX, etc. 1200-1700 some weak CA skywave like KMKY 1310, KSJX 1500, etc, still mostly weak. Graveyards show a weak mess on 1240, 1340, and KSUH 1450 via GW with one other fluttering. I have NEVER noticed this before.

I'm surprised there's no monster 2-meter Es right now. I thought solar flares increased the chance of big FM openings? Right now FM is dead, no sign of KNIX 102.5 Phoenix chewing up KZOK like I was expecting... ;D

Here in Northern Illinois MW conditions are slightly above normal. I'm getting east/west every bit as well as north/south.
The east coast & KOA are coming in every bit as well as WWL. Not only that if I null local WYLL I can hear KSL underneath.
There is no downgrade in DX conditions here and I'm not exactly in a southern latitude.
Go figure?
 
Well I'm at the 47th parallel, and conditions right now are mostly to the south. Had KNRY 1240 Monterey, CA at 8pm tonight, see thread for details as it's a new log, and farthest graveyarder I've ever logged.

I really did not notice anything the last 2 days outta the ordinary, except that I'm still getting E-skip on ch 2 (Global in Ontario 3 days in a row now).

In Mississippi, I can get WWL which is a local at night fairly weak. And I cannot get KOA at all which usually comes in after WQST in Forest, MS on 850 KHZ. I can get WLS but WBBM comes in a little more weakly. The Cubans that boom in every night on 1180 KHZ are a little weaker tonight. It seems that the Solar Storm has tended to weaken the reception of many distant stations tonight.
 
Possibly dumb question...I'm in Australia now. Does this phenomena work the same way, except directions reversed?
