WOQL - Signal upgrade?

I have noticed in the last couple of weeks that woql the 'weird' cool station in keene (part of the saga group) seems to be coming in allot better these days. Have they increased power....or is the antenna move I hear about happening?

Also....what is this station. I have been trying to figure out what the format is. It is kinda an oldies station....but some times they play stuff from the 80's. also no DJ's on the station....from what I hear....but I do think they have a morning show......are they going through any changes that anyone can tell me about......whats the deal?

I don't know about the lack of jox in Keene, because last I heard they were simulcasting another Saga-owned oldies station in Concord. I think their morning show is based out of Concord as well.

A lot of oldies formats all over the country are phasing out '50s music and adding early '80s tunes to their rotation - because the people who were kids listening to Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis in the '50s don't listen to the radio as much as they used to. So, to appeal to a younger demo (who generate more revenue for an oldies station), expect this '80s trend to continue.

The former "Magic 94" in West Lebanon was sort of the same way - you'd hear a Beatles song, then a Madonna song.

The signal was changed. In a deal where WILD-FM's owner Radio One signed a monetary deal (read: they sent them a check) for WOQL to "modify" it's directional pattern to eliminate more RF towards the Boston area and thus the nature of the tighter directional pattern means more signal towards Keene. (In response to that WILD-FM changed it's antenna system to give more RF towards Boston, WILD-FM's new signal is definatley much stronger in the metro Boston area).

Saga doesn't own an oldies station (or any stations, for that matter) in Concord, AFAIK. They had an oldies station in the Manchester market, but that got flipped to classic rock not too long ago (they used a "cool" logo similar to the one WOQL uses). Looking at WOQL's website, the only on-air personalities mentioned are news-types, all based in Keene (well, it doesn't say where the weather guy is from...). Same news staff as the other Saga stations in Keene. I've also heard Paul Scheuring doing news on co-owned WKVT-FM over in Brattleboro recently. Jean and Paul both have been at WKNE & co. for what seems like forever (going back to the Dick Lightfoot days at least).

Peace,

A google search finds the weather guy belongs to metroweather.

Before WKNE, Jean Fairbanks was on WARE in Ware, I believe.
(She was on WARE, but I am unsure if she went from WARE to WKNE or not).

I can't hear this station where I am near Boston, but I recall that their website listed a full airstaff of local DJ's last year, at least during daytime hours. They must've dumped them all within the past year.

I listened yesterday morning and I think that the morning show is live....and in Keene? The DJ according to the website came from Q106.

I swear I have heard him in CT or MA somewhere. I dont know the name though. He is interviewing allot of 'has beens'.....allot of these people I have never even heard of but he does a good job in the morning....even though I dont care for the music....I am tuning in....mostly because I hear it where I work....he seems to have fun on the air....and is very different energy wise.....

Has WOQL really gone directional? WILD-FMs signal still gets overwhelmed by WOQL in the same places in northern Middlesex County and the Nashua area as they did on WILD-FM's first day at the Blue Hill site. Too bad that they share frequencies, because either would come in pretty well in our area if the other was elsewhere on the dial. As it stands now, they battle it out over a pretty large area.

Either the directional pattern lobe only affects places directly SE of the TX site or it's not very directional. They still kick WILD off the dial with authority in most of Tyngsboro and Nashua. Places north and west of there can only get "Cool 97.7". I listened to 97.7 last night and Biggie Smalls was kicked off by Elvis (followed by Culture Club?!?) right around the Westford Road exit on route 3. As has been the case for quite some time.

If WOQL did go directional, it has made no difference in this area. They still have exert enough signal jamming power on 97.7 to make Castro proud.

I've heard this guy on the air a few times and he's pretty good. At WOQL, I think he does the show live.

Re: No Difference Here

That's all terrain.

I was there at the transmitter site.
The antenna installed is a new ERI 2 bay very directional antenna.
Beleive me, it does deepen the nulls to the South and Southeast.

Ahhhh, south and southeast - that's what I was wondering. My stomping grounds are to the east and it seems to make no difference. The null must not extend this way.

Interestingly enough, other stations from Keene and Orange/Athol, MA do not come in well (if at all) around here, yet WOQL booms in like an unwanted guest. So, I am not sure that the terrain argument works in this case. WKNE-FM is overwhelmed over most of this area by WPKQ, and the Keene area signals at 98.7 (WYNQ) and 104.9 (WYRY) aren't present at all. Nor are WJDF and WNYN receiveable - which are theoretically from the same area. Even 92.1 from Peterborough struggles to cover the whole Nashua area.

It's disappointing, because I had hoped that, with a directional signal for WOQL, we might get WILD-FM with a signal of similar strength to that of 101.7 WFNX. Not gonna happen, I guess.
