WOR Strikes Out

So last night I tune in to WOR on my way home, and Savage says that Donald Trump will be on after 6:30. Well, that will be interesting, I thought, completely forgetting about what happens at 6:30 on WOR.

He promotes the interview, and then just like clockwork, Brian Williams comes on at 6:30 with news I can get anywhere, including the now 3 ALL NEWS stations on the dial in NYC.

Tuned out, and never tuned back in.

Who's bone-headed idea is this anyway? Are they intentionally trying to make Savage's ratings plummet so they can get rid of him? How is it a good idea to completely obliterate a segment in the middle of a talk show?

So in other words, WNTIRadio, are you suggesting that WOR is trying to "fire" Savage? ::)

I also agree that regularly interrupting a scheduled program for another program - and not even the entire program (only the first segment, from what I understand) - makes no sense at all.

That won't stop the syndicated hosts from promoting upcoming guests/segments on their shows, though. You won't hear Colin Cowherd promote what's ahead for the 12 Noon hour "except for New York"... Though I recall back when Savage used to be on WABC that he used to rant on-air about how "the Mouse" would pre-empt his show for "the puck" (New Jersey Devils hockey). That Michael Savage would have said something on air about the current WOR 6:30 PM setup.

It's quite different to dump out of a show and not air the last hour.

This is literally blowing off a segment of a show, then going back to it. There is no continuity. You miss what is promoted, and then when the Nightly Snooze is over, you miss what was said in the last segment.

In a music format, that would be like having a :30 sponsor play over the second verse.

Judging by the MP3 URL in a previous post, it appears there's a "part 2" of the Trump interview? Wonder if that'll run the same time as yesterday's "part 1"?

@Scott: Another website that tracks when many talk shows are scheduled to air is TalkStreamLive.com.

It's not only the lack of continuity that's the problem -- a TV newscast on the radio is BAD RADIO!

Back in the early days of Television, it was feared that people would begin to reject radio as "TV without the pictures." That didn't happen, of course, because radio people knew how to fill in the missing visuals.

Now that WOR seems intent on broadcasting what is truly "TV without the pictures," maybe the fear will become reality.

Exactly. Me and a lot of other commuters as well. And when it comes back to part 2 of an interview where part 1 is missing, it kind of misses the point.

Again, how much would you enjoy the Beatles "A Day in the Life" if the middle part was a :60 spot.

I listen to static filled out of market stations or stream them online in order to listen to his show. Pretty obvious they are trying to destroy the show at WOR when you have local listeners resorting to listening to out of market stations and youtube in order to hear his show.

This has been going on long enough that I wonder why Savage has not worked out a deal to be on another station here in NY. If WEMP was going to switch from news to a talk format he might be a good fit over there.

Now is not Savage's rosiest time in his radio career, as much as i love his show I've come to the conclusion that Savage is out to destroy his show himself! His extremely poor attendance record has caused stations around the country to drop his show like the plague. Savage didn't add any station in the last 2 years but ho lost many top market affiliates.
WIND in Chicago
KNEW San Fran. (hometown!)
KLIF Dallas-Ft worth
Mighty WSB Atlanta
KTTH Seattle
KFYI Phoenix
WTMJ Milwaukee
WOKV Jacksonville
and many more....
His show is virtually not heard in 7 out of the top 10 markets!! Any wonder WOR is not afraid to screw with Savage ???

Yes, i know that in a few of the markets mentioned above, Savage found home on a less rates third tier talk station, so he is technically cleared in that market, but that's the equivalent of Curtis Sliwa show heard on WNYM... Anyone remembers Curtis ??

WOR needs to be reinvented and moved to FM, if it is to survive as a news/talk outlet. My only reason to tune in WOR is for Rutgers football and men's b-ball. :)

@Scott: The logical next resort for Savage in New York would likely be at the station you referred to at the end of your post, WNYM (970 The Apple). The problem is, I think Salem (owner of WNYM) has some kind of grudge with Savage - I recall when WHK in Cleveland booted his show around the time of his "autism is fake" comments... I believe he's on Salem's station in Philly, and if he is, it's on overnight tape delay. Though I think even that station, WNTP, has done away with Savage, as well...

Business as usual for WOR. Anyone know what's going on with Smerconish? I read on one of these boards a few months ago they were going to drop him but I haven't heard who they'll replace him with.

You probably read it on this thread, Brooklyn... And I have yet to hear who WOR will be replacing Michael Smerconish with. With less than two weeks to go in the year, you'd think they'd give us a clue, right?
