Worcester pirates

Drove briefly through Worc. area on I-290. Heard the following pirates:

nothing on AM, but on FM:
105.5--supposedly a station called Flava 105 has been on this freq before and they've been
warned, fined...well a pirate was there today. WEEI's sister station in the Springfield area
is about 43 miles away but instead you get this pirate

106.5--if you're trying to hear Abba on Magic 106.7--you can dance, you can dine--and you can try to hear a legit station despite interference from this illegal outlet, pushing an overmodulated signal (a capella singers etc) right NEXT to WMJX

102.9--WDRC-FM from Hartford? Not the Big D, but a pirate...

Some mentions online of pirates like these.

Of course WEEI programming is on AM 1440 in Worc but maybe not the best signal at night. I'm not sure how well the 105.5 or 103.7 signals of WEEI would reach Worc., but there is indeed a pirate on 105.5 blocking the signal from Easthampton/Springfield area

Um, off-topic?

Staying on topic, and hoping that Methuen-From-Laurence can add to the discussion:
When you have stations in Hartford (102.9 WDRC), Easthampton (WVEI-FM
at 105.5) and Boston (106.7 WMJX) whose signals theoretically could reach Worcester
and serve that community, and pirates on or near that frequency prevent these stations
from being heard, it isn't right. Similarly, WCRB's listeners in some parts of Boston couldn't
pick up their favorite station thanks to Datz Hits illegal broadcasts at 99.7, it was important
that the station be squashed so that the legally-licensed station couldn't be blocked.

I cite:

>>Listener: I look forward to the BSO broadcasts on Saturday night, but since WCRB switched to 99.5 it has been virtually impossible to listen these broadcasts. I live in the Ashmont neighborhood of Dorchester and most of the time the WCRB signal is completely overwhelmed by a gospel/hiphop station which broadcasts on 99.7.

(Incidentally, I am not a Republican, I am unenrolled and in some ways my politics are
on the libertarian side aka "classical liberal" as Avi "No Relation" Nelson just mentioned on RKO...)

Um, you mean it's not ok to make a little joke on a rainy Monday? I just linked a Monty Python skit in a post about an attempt to assassinate Hitler (It's on the Geekolinks blog in mediaite.com).

You can make a joke, of course :) But I was making a point about pirates honing in on legit signals,
including the Boston-area classical station. I do remember the "Mr Hilter" sketch and I'll add that I once had the distinct responsibility of interviewing Pythonite Graham Chapman on WMWM in 1982 :)
And speaking of small furry animals, onetime GOP pres. candidate Mike Huckabee, who now does a weekly show on Fox News, boasted of enjoying "fried squirrels"...

>>"Mika, I bet you never did this," Huckabee went on, addressing Mika Brzezinski. "When I was in college, we used to take a popcorn popper, because that was the only thing they would let us use in the dorm, and we would fry squirrels in a popcorn popper in the dorm room."

There's no stopping me...I'm on a roll now. At Drudge's link to flooding in DC, I suggested they bring in TX Governator Perry to pray FOR rain STAT. Problem solved. Now on to the Comedy blog at HuffPost. Then Max Robbins at RKO's stream. Did I say "stream"? I gotta go (Ian Scholes).

only 3 ? no wonder they call it "worst"-r

actually listened to 88.5 long enough to ID. and heard multiple stations. Signal FM, and CAraibes FM, so it's jjst some dude playing the webstream of whatever station fits his fancy at the current moment. i think i heard Fusion FM out of Miami too.

actually listened to 91.7 long enough to ID them - Vision Star - out of brockton . had to climb a hilltop in blue hills (353 feet) to hear them and 87.9, which i was too impatient to wait for an ID since it was wet as hell

Meanwhile 1200 hires Jay Severin for 3-6 pm; it looks like they're committed to conservative talk for awhile longer. (Given his voice and music beds I was known to call him Jay Excedrin
because you needed an aspirin after listening! :) )

>>TX Governator Perry

Someone on Free Republic noted when I posted a pic of the old
"Pat Patriot" (Bos/NE Pats logo) that he kind of looks like Perry!

Huff Post btw was started by Andrew Breitbart, believe it or not, at the request of
Arianna, dahling. Even though he isn't quite a liberal (used to be, though). I got the audiobook of Breitbart's latest book and he talks all about it)
From a review of the book on amazon: "Breitbart also tells about his key involvement in creating what is now the antithesis to his Big sites - The Huffington Post. Yes, The Huffington Post likely would not exist without Andrew Breitbart, and he is proud of it. He and Arianna Huffington, though on opposites side politically, are still friends"

why have that pirate station (Flava 105.5?)
In Worcester area, arn't you able to pick up "HOT 106.3"? On my way to Amherst, Ma, we took the Mass Pike. From Natick, Ma to just past Worcester, we picked up most Providence FM stations, From Natick to Worcester, we also picked up 96.3 The Rose (this was about four years ago)
Are you able to get WEEI 103.7 in Worcester? I'm sure it might come in around that area? We picked up 94.1 HJY, we started losing it around Ware which is ??? one or two towns before Palmer, Ma

I was only passing through Worc., not living there, and just scanning the dial
Acc to radio-locator.com (not entirely accurate) 106.3 should reach Worc. with a
so-so signal (maybe a 4 out of 10)
On the Pike etc Prov stations are an easy get, and you can see from a map you're
not too far away from RI at that time. Cape stations may come in too, esp. during summer

The radio-locator map (for basic signals) didn't list the 103.7. I will say in Hartford and
just north and east of there, the 103.7 comes in fairly well as does the 105.5
WVEI signal.

106.3 is not a very good catch in the city proper and just about non-existent in the northern suburbs. South of the city is where it does best signal wise. As for 103.7 it is just about the same for Worcester.

Not only does 105.5 interfere with WVEI-FM but it causes big problems for WVBF especially downtown when travelling on 290. Also, there is absolutley no hope for the FM translator of the former WEIM, can't recall the new call letters at this time...must be another senior moment , at 105.3. In fact when they advertise in the T&G, they don't even mention the 105.3 frequency just AM 1280.

But I did pick up the 105.3 a bit north of Worc.

I think WROR (it hasn't been WVBF for awhile :) )/Greater Media had complained about the
105.5 pirate.

thank you for your responces, I appriciate it a lot
I also picked up most Provicence stations, and Cape Cod stations when I worked in Southborough, Ma. This was around 1998-2001

WTAG's translator on 94.9 is licensed to "Tatnuck," a Worcester neighborhood. Where is the translator's transmitter? Could it move to Asnebumskit (where WSRS's transmitter is located)? Asnebumskit is, by far, the best FM site in central Mass. Even with WHOM to contend with, 250W on 94.9 from Asnebumskit ought to provide pretty respectable coverage.

That's where it is, WSRS's tower on Asnebumskit, that's why it has such incredible coverage for a translator. I hear it down here on the south shore.

quatre-van-huit pwin cinq.. c'est BEL TOP

pirating WFCR right out from under us...

im kinda wondering when someone will fire up on 99.9. like a 10 watt high school station way out in Holliston which is on maybe 6 hours a day would notice. plus you wouldnt be stepping on 99.5's IBOC
