Worcester Ratings.... whats next for 98.9?

The Worcester ratings also came out today. 100.1 is way up with their new format, but they also completely wiped 98.9 off the map in the process! Whats next, Wild 98.9, Froggy 98.9...

Jam'n has a nice share in Worcester that someone could really take advantage of. The only problem is that 98.9's signal really isn't very good, particularly in the city of Worcester itself. But seeing that WCRN's good-AM-signal-but-mostly-satellite oldies format is getting better ratings then the mostly-local oldies-but-lousy-FM-rimshot Oldies 98.9, something seems to be wrong.

I'd say for them to go R/CHR, however, this is the format that the signal would do the worst in. Worcester County always seemed to rate well for WKLB, although Worcester did not work for the old Q-100. If 100FM The Pike did not have it's ratings boost, I would have said to dump that to 98.9 (plus, The Pike would be 90 on both the FM dial and the Interstate) and do a R/CHR on 100.1. I don't know what they'll do, but they've got to do something.

Might Jack or one of his friends pop-up at 98.9??

A "Jack"-type format, if nothing else, would likely be 24/7 automated, which would save on the costs of paying an airstaff and make the station more profitable, even if their revenues don't increase.

That would be a worse move than having The Pike kill oldies, because a Jack/Mike/Bob would completely overlap with WWFX and WXLO.

Other Woos-ter Ratings Thoughts

While WSRS-96.1 and WAAF-107.3 were one-two in 12-plus (as they have been, in that order, for many years) in the Worcester Spring books, some interesting sidelights:

* WTKK-96.9 has a higher 12-plus share of audience in Worcester than it's home market of Boston.

* So did WJMN-94.5, WKLB-99.5, and WZLX-100.7. All three had a bigger 12-plus share in Worcester than in their home market.

* WWFX-100.1 made a big move upwards in 12-plus numbers. Being a class "A" FM signal may limit how well they eventually do (given that listeners some distance away from Worcester won't find their signals as strong as those of WSRS and WAAF), they have become a force in the Worcester market.

Am I missing something? How would a station on 98.9 be "90 on the FM dial"?

This would also be because Worcester doesn't have as many stations on the dial to choose from like Boston does. When there's less to choose from, people will listen to the stations there are to choose from more often, especially when there's no competing format.

But the Worcester market itself doesn't cover as large of an area as Boston does. WWFX covers as much area as they need to. WWFX still comes in fairly well in Framingham, and Framingham is part of the Boston market.

You're missing nothing, that was just the dumbest comment I have ever made.

Slightly off topic, but do you know where the Boston market cuts off? Worcester County (which would be Framingham's neighbor Southboro)?

Here's a wild idea.
98.9 an eclectic, freeform mix of jazz, blues and folk

or, a simulcast of WICN.

I'd love it. Who knows, it could get enough of a cult following to do better than an also-ran oldies station that's not even showing in the ratings. But, Citadel would never do it.

A commercial station simulcasting a non-comm? I don't think that would work unless Citadel sold it to WICN.

Citadel has a station in Portland Maine also at 98.9 WCLZ thats AAA and doesn't do real bad The format fits the above description as much as a commercial station can. They play a lot of local artist and put out CD's of local artist.
