WORD Illegal ID?

Throughout the day today, News Radio WORD has been playing a 4th of July themed ID at the top of every hour- with one minor issue.

The ID says, "Happy birthday, America, from WORD, WGVC-FM Simpsonville-Greenville-Spartanburg, WYRD Greenville, WORD Spartanburg."

Unless the 106.3 FM signal has reverted back to its former callsign, the ID they've been running all day is not only outdated, but very much ILLEGAL. It would make sense that it's an old ID, assuming 106.3's legal call sign may have still been WGVC for awhile after the flip to the simulcast of WORD, but, if that is the case, is anyone at Entercom paying attention?

Not that most listeners care about hourly ID's anyway, or if the FCC enforces ID rules that strictly these days. Just something I noticed and thought was strange.

I don't understand why an ID like that was ever used. According to the FCC database, the WYRD-FM calls for 106.3 were acquired on 6/13/2008 and are still in use. That's the day they started simulcasting the AM's. So, there has never been a July 4th with the WGVC calls since the trimulcast began.

Their ID's are confusing anyway they're on so many stations...who's even listening to the AM's anymore? 5%? I say LMA, sell, or flip the AM's and focus the branding on promoting the FM, not just saying "now on FM at 106.3" after 2 years. Sports talk is no longer viable for 1330/950 since it is on 1440 now.

And I'm happy to have it. I didn't know it until I ran into Greg McKinney at a Chamber of Commerce function but now I'm seeing billboards around the Upstate as well. I also notice we've got ESPN in Spartanburg on 1400 am. I thought for a long time Entercom would put sports on the AM's but I guess not. They might be right to leave Talk on the AM's though. The FM signal is good but the AMs surely fill in some holes. Even if it's only five or ten percent of listening, that might be more noticeable in ratings than you might think with a talk station's long TSL. Between 1440 am in Greenville and ESPN on 1400 in Spartanburg, sports radio is more available than it used to be.
