Word is....

Ahh, the king of bad "linking" I'm using the word linking, but I know it's not the right term. I'm referring to when he takes a call that is supposedly live, and you can totally tell it is not. I know all shows have pre-recoreded calls, but his are the worst.

I've seen The Laffer on other major market boards predicting firings, etc,so this may just be smoke but if Lander is going I can see Greg Daniels moving into the morning show and taking Fab Freddie(whose presence on Boston radio continues to amaze)with him.

If Lander is on his way out, it is my thought that he is being forced out by the Star invasion over at Mix and then Gregg (who seems to be gunning for the gig) will have his slot and Freddy (annoying as hell) will be there with him and we can only hope if this is the case they keep Sue Brady - she seems like the only one with a soul in that crew.

Ok...."IF" there is any truth to this, and I was in the PD's spot at MIX, I would really not be looking to Greg Daniels and Fast Freddy as the solution to fixing the disapointment in ratings over the past few years with Lander, nor would I be looking to Worcester for help. Zito does great for "that" market, but I do not think what he is doing there would work well with the Boston Market. It just sounds very medium market....and that is not a bad thing....unless you try to emulate it in a top market.

This is a tough market to compete in the 25-54 ratings game and going against shows like Matty, Ramiro & Pebbles (I would say they are more 18-34 but their 25-54#'s have been climbing lately), Mike Adams, Oldies, and Mike FM for that matter in morning drive requires something that is going to really catch listeners attention and convert them over. MIX has never really been something special in the morning, and I think "if" they are going to make this change, they need to bring in someone who knows how to win in a major market, and has the history to walk in and make things happen from day 1. Greg is a great talent, don't get me wrong, but I have heard some tapes of him from when he did morning in NY and I would say he is better off sticking to what he does best and that is afternoon drive. Just because you perform well in one daypart, does not mean that you are morning material.

As for Freddy, he does have his moments, but this is someone whose experience consists on working in promotions for WJMN for something around 10 years and then with a walk on role for the former STAR morning show. He is very "niche" in what his character would bring, and maybe is better suited for a "man on the street" type character, but I can't see him pulling off a side kick role and having it work long term, especially with MIX's format, this is not STAR, this is a HOT AC station, and you need to be true to that with your show characters.

I would think that MIX does need to think about making a change, but I would really cast that net a little bigger, and bring someone in who can make an impact that is so needed at that station (as well as the market for that matter), someone who can come in and get that morning show to out perform the station and stand out a bit.

Who would this be? I am not sure, but I think this requires a proven winner or else MIX will still be where they are now, but with a less costly talent than Lander.

Just my opinion....

Perhaps Karen Blake can go for that Morning show that she so longs to return to. Since McKenna is at the helm, perhaps he can team her and Freedie back up. ;)
However there just may not be any truth to Lander leaving, wasn't it just a couple of years ago, he inked a multi-year deal?

Wasn't one of Star's initial tactics to bring personalities to Boston that were well known in the market? It may not have worked due to the format itself, but going on the premise of Jerry McKenna now at Mix does anyone think any change in the morning show might bring Ralphie Marino back to Boston? Diana Steele is already playing some part in Lander's show so that could be expanded & a new night jock hired.

Karen Blake and Ralphie Marino are great examples of jocks who have proven track records in afternoon drive, but were unable to pull off mornings....and that was a show that had Freddie on it. If this move is going to happen, it needs to be with a proven winner or else you are going to take 3 steps back from where you are now....and that would not be good for MIX! This is not to be a knock against Ralphie and Karen, they are just not meant to be morning jocks. Look at Karen now...doing VERY well in afternoons at Oldies...why would she want to leave that? And as for Ralphie, I think he had to slip to Portsmouth or Manchester to keep doing mornings. I am sure he could have landed in a much higher market doing mid-days or afternoons....but I guess he wants to keep working at the morning grind. And again Freddie is a promo dept guy...why are people even considering him for this?? This is market 11 we are talking about...not 200. Top Markets need top talent......

I disagree with you. I was never a big Karen Blake fan over the past couple of years. True, she's very Boston but that is literally the only place she can work with that accent etc. The Ralphie and Karen thing didnt work largely because Star the station overall never worked. As morning shows go they did a good one topical and had more life to it than Lander's yack about random topics with no point to any of them really. Ralphie didnt have to slip to Exeter NH to stay in mornings, he has a family and he likes living in NH and did not want to take the kids out of school and move them again it is not that he had no options.

So, if Ralhie Marino got an offer to go to a larger market he would stay in New Hampshire because of his kids schooling...you're nuts! (oh and speaking of him doesn't Ralphie Marino have a strong New York accent!) I think people liked the morning show on Star and just because the station went to "Jack' doesn't mean there weren't a lot of talented people that worked there...including Karen and freddy and Lady D. You have a right to your opinion but I think they are all doing just fine now and they are all very well liked.

I dont really get your point since I was not putting anyone down. I mean Ralphie's family is happy in NH Im not sure what you're arguing. Ralphie does have a strong NY accent that he also plays up/exaggerates on air.. Ralphie HAS worked in NY, he was hired for Jamn from Hot 97,NYC and did mornings at KTU NYC before coming back to Star so if you think Ralphie is in NH because that is the only job he can get?. YOU are nuts (no offense). Yes KB has her fans since she's been in the market for going on 30 years she's just may not be my taste. Is that ok?. 8)

Get your head out of bed
Don't act like your body's lead

Some guy saying "word is Lander is out" is not a news story, it is BS (and not believable source). Until there is an actual link (no, not the Boston Herald's 'inside track') but an accurate link, there is NO truth to the story, nada, nothing, not a darn thing. You'll just have to sit and wait for an actual press announcement froma credible source like Radio and Records, Variety, Billboard, etc.

And, while we're on the subject of Mix985, if, in any way, there is even a sniff of truth to this (which I believe there is not), that means that all bets are off on Mix's format.
You "JACK FM" watchers will have field day with this. But while you do, I should point out, there are many Star, Jam'n'/Z 94-5 and Kiss people now at Mix, and just above, there is a post aobut whether "Move'n' " or another "Star93-7" type format will come to Boston. There is also the fact that Classic Dance music is no longer heard on WILD AM or FM in Boston. Something to think about, huh?

Hot AC has always been just another version of CHR (imho), not really a different format from Top 40. But now the 90's have long ended, the coffee house trends are over, and Hot AC can not stand on it's own. So, if it is true that Lander is out (which I do not believe he is), nobody at "Mix" is safe.

But we have a long way (and I do mean LONG way to go) before we get to that discussion. Remember, Lander is under contract, and owns a very nice expensive house in the Suburbs (Wellesley?) It is not in his best interest to leave 98.5, unless he has somewhere else better to go.

Greg Daniels is an AVERAGE jock at best....and my guess is not too many people know his name since he has the traffic girl repeating it 10 times in one report...it sounds ridiculous. I wouldn't put him in morning drive.
