WORJ

In the early '70s, WORJ was the highest rated Rock station in America. When Progressive Rock Stations were averaging a 2 Share in markets across America, WORJ had a 7.7 Rating. Lee Arnold, Doug Van Allen. Mike Lyons, Bill McGathy. Steve Mack, Neal Mirsky, Chal Martina were the Full Timers during that period. (1971-1975). It had more listeners than WLOF, WBJW, WDIZ, It was a great time in Orlando Rock Radio History. If you were in Orlando in those days, it was what you listened to. Is there anyone out there who was old enough back then to share some WORJ stories?
BTW: worj.com is streaming a live 24/7 version of what they think WORJ would sound like today.

::) I definately was around in those times but I swear I don't remember any "Book" showing that! Got one to post? "In America" Man, that's a lot of stations!!

Big Ape-Somewhere in the boxes and boxes, I do in fact have a copy of that book. In the meantime I can refer you to the worj.com website. In the Pictures section, under memorabilia, there is a feature article from industry trade magazine, Record World, circa September, 1974. It refers to WORJ's ratings success and specifically mentions the fact that WORJ beat WLOF in the Arbitron ratings. It also notes that WORJ was #1 in Men 18+, #2 Women 18+ and #2 in Teens. These were, in fact, remarkable numbers for an AOR Radio station. The following year, 1975, was when WORJ increased those ratings even higher to that 7.7 share that I referred to. Hope this Record World article jogs your memory. Orlando's Rock radio past does include an amazing story.

WOW...WORJ beat WLOF!!! I thought they were THE station even in the late 70's when other places had FM Top 40's!

I remember seeing a 1976 Disney "cast member" newspaper for sale on eBay and one of the ads was for a WLOF "Service Industry Night" type of club outing, complete with the most popular (radio) DJ's in Central Florida! Plus, 18+ Welcome! Geez, those were the days....

We Love Orlando Florida - WLOF was an AM station - 95

it was over for them by early 1980s when they began simulcasting on WBJW......

In 1982 I specifically recall WLOF simulcasting AM Drive with WBJW 105.1 FM, but then in an example I have, an aircheck of Bobby Sharpe, doing late mornings on 950 WLOF. Don't recall about PM drive, it it was a simulcast. I was stationed at the Naval Training Center Orlando, at the time.
